Late today probably 40 martins left our site headed north from north Mississippi. Apparently we are still having some ASY males come in with no place to stay here. Don't really understand that at May 2. Sure lots of these were SY martins. Each evening lately we have had excess martins here that are leaving due to no vacancy or just trying to find a place for the night with no luck. We probably have a few open cavities on T-14 but for some reason the T-14 never fills up. I hope these martins finds homes with those still watching and waiting

- Martin Colony History: I have been exposed to purple martin sounds in utero when my mother went out to get my father away from his martin colony.
I played around the martin colony every summer and watched as my father maintained his colony. In the late 50's until the 70's he did not notice European Starlings in south Texas.
When old enough, I helped maintain his colony. My primary task was eliminating English House Sparrows with a 1956 Benjamin 317 .177 air rifle.
When I settled into my own home, I started my first colony with an original Trio Castle and Trio Grandpa. When I moved again, I did not put up any martin houses. Frustration with European Starlings in the Southeast US was overwhelming.
Found PMCA Forum and learned about modern enlarged compartments and SREHs.
Inherited my father's last martin house, a Trio Grandma, modified it to modern specifications and have had good results since then.
Brenda,
Good news for anxious martin hosts.
I have helped mentor several new local martin hosts over the past month and they are hoping for some martin tenants. We have established 30 new, modern martin compartments at good sites in the Collierville area.
Just as important, send more martins to our northern hosts. I know there are many worthy, hopeful and excited martin hosts waiting and watching.
Mark.

Indeed! Many small colony landlords (some have older, established small colonies) in my area are all scratching their heads wondering what has happened to their beloved Purple Martins. The birds are few and late. My Romeo got so lonesome after 3 weeks, he left. But on the other hand, the weather has been so crummy and cold until now.... It has been a LOOONG 5 1/2 weeks since the first scout landed on my house!
Birdygirl, I do hope your T14 fills up this year. Thank you for the encouraging update. It gives me hope.

I noticed my first SY male this morning. He is a resident bird, having already claimed "bragging rights" on a Troyer horizontal w/ Conley 2 entrance. I suspect he's been around a day or two since he already occupied the gourd at sunrise this morning. It's still early up here in my opinion. I still have adults trying to fight their way in despite only a few empty gourds remaining...but the ASYs completely let the SY take an empty gourd.

Many extras again tonight! I had to run some off. Cannot stand for them to sit out on racks during the night due to owls. Would rather them stay in trees than sit in open. Been seeing occasional owl under feather in yard last few days. While mowing yesterday saw one at martin colony.
I do hope all of you pick up extra martins and those waiting on first martins get them this year.
