worm drive winch

I finally got my public site housing up this afternoon. The t-14 pole has the worm drive winch and it's great. if you are not familiar you may want to check one out. basically they have no handle and you raise/lower the house/rack using a cordless drill. not only is it smooth effortless, and time saving; it's MUCH SAFER. I made a 3ft rod that inserts in the drill and has a hooked end that slips on to the winch. this allows the landlord to raise and lower the setup completely out of harm's way. Dang I wish I could post photos.

I have been using worm gear winches for years. To take any vibration out of the winch I use a double nut tightened against each other and add a Socket to the drill with a universal joint between the socket and the drill. This makes the house raise and lower very smoothly. I also lubricate the winch often due to the speed of the worm gear on the winch.

Once we become senior citizens we can appreciate these winches more.

Bob: understand the double nut but not sure I understand the u-joint part. what type of u-joint and how can I find/make one? the rod I'm using at present works pretty darn good but there is some vibration. does the u-joint you are using also keep out from under the setup?. thanks

Hi Tim,

You can buy a universal joint set for sockets at any tool store. It plugs directly into the socket and takes out almost all vibration from the winch. You can use as long an extension as you want but I use a short one.

Robbo not sure if you've used the winches before, if not you'll find them amazing. I used the u-shaped nut that comes with the winch then used a rod that rv campers use for raising and lowering their awnings. I shortened the rod and bent an open ended loip on one end that slips over the u-shaped bolt on the winch. the other end of the rod I grinded flat on three or for sides to have grip when placing inside drill chuck.the rod is about 3 ft. in length and keeps landlord completely out from under setup while raising and lowering and boy is it smooth and quick and effortless.bob's double nut method with socket and extension and u-joint should prove just as effective.can't wait til I can afford another worm winch for my home t-14.
