Spotted a female on perch.....right side of head featherless and bloody..maybe eye loss... Any ideas??Injured female PM

Welcome to the forum. Since she is still alive maybe a fight with another martin. I am thinking if it was a starling or hawk she probably wouldn't have survived unless she was lucky enough to escape somehow. Kind of difficult to say for sure.

I have had a colony for 5 years. Last year 26 pairs. I didn't know martins would hurt other martins so severely. Does anyone know if she will survive?? It's been cold in Ohio...but I think I have a returning dozen so far. I did see her go into a gourd where there was another female. As so tried to exit the other female grabbed her feet on way out. Although I noticed her wounds way before that. Will she survive?
I think that just depends. Don't think anyone can be certain if she will or won't. Did you try to look with binoculars? To see how bad or if the eye was gone? Maybe she tangoed with a starling?

If you have any starlings around, I'm guessing that's what happened. Fortunately she made it out.. I'm sure she will live, but will be more susceptible to future predator attacks with that one eye..if you have starlings, do your best to trap or shoot them, or this will definitely happen again..good luck..

As of 2018 - 84 cavities offered, max # of pairs hosted - 82.
Agreed with Tony - likely a starling attack. And as Chickadee states, it's hard to tell if she will make it or not. So sorry to hear of your injured female. I think I recall seeing a post once by Penny - "TX Rehabber" where she stated that infection is one of the biggest issues with birds with injuries. If you wanted to try to help her, you could try to trap her and administer some antibiotics to the injured area, then release her. Or, even better, if you can find a rehabber in your area, take her there.
