Well this is what my setup looks like after 4+ in of snow overnight. As of last Monday I had 2 martins.Where they are at now ,who knows? If they are in the houses they cannot get out as all the holes are covered up,Also I don't think they can handle this cold weather.Supposed to get down to the 20s tonight.Hope they had enough sence to go someplace else.

You might want to check the gourds today - your weather should be good enough for the martins to feed tomorrow. The martins may be waiting out the bad weather in a gourd; they can survive 3, sometimes more days, of no feeding, if they fed well before the bad weather set in.

You could use a long pole with something fastened to the end to push snow away from all the entrances - though today they probably will not go out at all. They have been seen flying off in low 40s and even upper 30s if it's sunny, presumably knowing where to find food under poor conditions.

With the cold. Don't know where they would go? Have you tried to feed them? Put crickets on their porches?

Louse,Right now the wind has came up and the snow is being shook off,and ChickadeeLI feel better not to disturb them if they are in the holes.Heard about the feeding bit but never did try it.Hope tomorrow will be a little better, but think Friday will get warmer.

Weather report I checked said 46 tomorrow and 60s after that. IF the weatherman is right, they could get out and feed tomorrow - here's hoping!

I can sympathize with you. Same here but 2 inches of snow wind gust 30 plus mph 25 degrees. I have 2 pair since 3-23. Putting Crickets on inside porch,8 dozen so far. They left this morning about 8am, seam to be ok. The only real problem is that the darn  starlings are trying to get the Crickets too, have to keep chasing them away :x Oh well things will get better

Actually, weather here has been cloudy and cool for quite a long time, and with drizzle some days - we fed martins the other day but they are able to feed most days, and it's improving. And we always welcome rain here!

I can't believe the snow is melting so fast, the 2- 1/2 inches we had this morning is 80% gone. I guess the strong winds make it feel a lot colder than what it is.

I have one Martin female that returned on March 24th and stayed in all day the 25th (cold) and will today (cold winds over 20 and 35 degrees). Future weather doesn't look promising either. I hope she has lots of fat stores and remains cozy in her igloo. I am 30 miles south of Wildcatervin :-(

Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.

I had these conditions last year after 20 martins arrived. Maybe a little more ice. First thing in the morning I removed the snow and ice so they could get out of the compartments. Then I fed, fed, fed for several days. My beloved birds survived.

Please don't wait to try the feeding bit. Also don't expect their fat reserves to last more than three days. They don't have much fat. Their bodies will start to break down nutrients from their breast and organs and they succomb quickly.

There are a lot of things to do for them that will help them thrive.
