Do I hear a, MIZ-.......

Home for dinner and developing whiplash looking out the window - there he was, sitting atop the Goliad, squawking away in hopes of greeting others. Looks like he'll have the colony to himself tonight!

Congrats on other Missouri arrivals - JL, Kathy, and others!

Wow - I don't think we've ever had this happen have we?? Congratulations, Jeff!! - mine is spending the night alone too (not for long, I'm sure).

I had the feeling that they would be pushing in here today, with that southerly wind!

Martin Colony History: First pair in 2009 after 28 years of trying. 3 pairs 2010, 17 pairs 2011 and 35-45 pairs since. Many additional colonies are now springing up around mine in an area once completely void of Martins. I offer 50 compartments at my site consisting of primarily Excluder II gourds on Gemini racks. Also a wooden T-14. I utilize electric fence type predator guards on the base of the poles. Supplemental feeding is crucial in maintaining my colony. I platform feed throughout the season as needed. My site tends to be a stop over point for additional birds as they migrate further north.

Great News Jeff!

The lonely winter is history!

Doug
Supplemental feeding plays a major role in Western Pennsylvania. Finally got my 1st pair in 2009 after 28 years of effort. The colony has grown quickly to 45 pairs that I care for. Many new colonies have now sprung up around me in the past few years as well. Where there was none.... there is many.

Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.

I'm sure you heard a WSU! Oh wait that was me with no martins for my focus. I'm happy for you neighbors! Now. No ice and snow this year. Right, Missouri?

Still looking. Still listening.

Nice to see all the Mo. reports. Now if we can just get the wind to blow a little more east to west maybe some of those martins will end up in Ks.

Martin Colony History: 85 pair in 2020. Seems fairly consistent the last few years.

Hello Jeff,
Congrats! I really like to see your report along with KathyF because that means I usually have Martins within a week. Guess what! I had three Martins this morning and was so glad to see them. This means another dot on the map in south Mo. between Rogersville and Licking. Hope we all have great PM year.

Keith - I was watching for your report - I figured they'd be at your site by today. Temps are expected to be 77 here.

There are now 4 here - 3 males, 1 female.....

Thanks Buddy ... was beginning to worry there weren't any serious MIZZOU fans among the forum members!!

Congrats to all on your arrivals - busy days keeping me from the forum as often as I like.

I had 8 martins last night, all paired up already. The 4 pairs tucked in by 6:56p.

Martin Colony History: First martins in 2008. Currently have housing for 36 pairs. Usually get about 28.

I am in Columbia and haven't seen any yet but I usually don't have any until around the 20th. I still have my houses lowered to keep the sparrows out but I my raise them this weekend with only a few compartments open. Thanks for the updates everyone.

Jeff is your whiplash neck feeling any better? Nothing like a little dose of purple to make everything wonderful! 8)

Martin Colony History: I have been exposed to purple martin sounds in utero when my mother went out to get my father away from his martin colony.
I played around the martin colony every summer and watched as my father maintained his colony. In the late 50's until the 70's he did not notice European Starlings in south Texas.
When old enough, I helped maintain his colony. My primary task was eliminating English House Sparrows with a 1956 Benjamin 317 .177 air rifle.
When I settled into my own home, I started my first colony with an original Trio Castle and Trio Grandpa. When I moved again, I did not put up any martin houses. Frustration with European Starlings in the Southeast US was overwhelming.
Found PMCA Forum and learned about modern enlarged compartments and SREHs.
Inherited my father's last martin house, a Trio Grandma, modified it to modern specifications and have had good results since then.

Mary,
Maybe you have come up with a new preseason exercise.
Before your martins arrive, you need to start craning your neck back to get in shape looking up in the sky.
