24 or 18 hour hand warmers are best, put into gourd or room about 3-4 pm. We put two in, and bury them under nest material - they should not be visible or might scare martins out. Plug most cavities so you can place warmers in just a few, that you know they are already using. We had one martin survive more than 5 days when temps never got out of the 20s - hand warmers and dead crickets placed inside every afternoon may have been why he made it.
A 40 watt light bulb can go into center room of house, then plug that room; head will radiate to next door compartments. Use an outside, heavy duty extension cord.

Are we talking a light bulb like we use in are house ? Or one like in little light up Christmas houses?

A regular household light bulb. We know a landlord in MO who uses a flexible birdbath heater in his houses - it's like a foil mat that can be bent to fit into rooms.

We have experimented with several brands, and HotHands is definitely the best.

Louise, The flexible birdbath heater is an excellent suggestion. You always have great advice. Thanks.
