It's a good idea to work on being able to identify House Sparrows, male, female, or juvenile, with confidence, to avoid bad mistakes.
This link is helpful: http://www.sialis.org/otherbrownbirds.htm
and this one http://bfec.kenyon.edu/images/Sparrows.pdf
You can also make your own ID chart using images from google image search, for the native sparrows you see most often. Winter plumage can make it harder to ID some native sparrows, but male and female House Sparrows will not change, so focus on those. And remember that no native sparrows are cavity nesters; they will not show an interest in nestboxes or gourds.
Feeders will attract both native and non-native sparrows, so if you use a bait trap, you can try different baits (large chunks of white bread often work well) and when it's nesting season again, white sparrows and nest material make good trap baits too.

- Martin Colony History: I have been exposed to purple martin sounds in utero when my mother went out to get my father away from his martin colony.
I played around the martin colony every summer and watched as my father maintained his colony. In the late 50's until the 70's he did not notice European Starlings in south Texas.
When old enough, I helped maintain his colony. My primary task was eliminating English House Sparrows with a 1956 Benjamin 317 .177 air rifle.
When I settled into my own home, I started my first colony with an original Trio Castle and Trio Grandpa. When I moved again, I did not put up any martin houses. Frustration with European Starlings in the Southeast US was overwhelming.
Found PMCA Forum and learned about modern enlarged compartments and SREHs.
Inherited my father's last martin house, a Trio Grandma, modified it to modern specifications and have had good results since then.
If in doubt about visual identification of a male English House Sparrow, then just listen for the nerve racking, chalkboard sound,
Cheep! Cheep! Cheep!

Louise,
Those were very good pictures. I have already identified a few more birds that frequent our home area but didn't realize what they were...only that were pretty and amusing.
Thank you,
Debbie

I once shot a Dickcissel because I thought it was a house sparrow, and last year I had a Lark Sparrow build two partial nests in one of my Martin Houses. It finally gave up the job but could have been shot because of mistaken identity. I now try to be absolutely positive of ID before I pull the trigger.

DON, That makes two Dickcissel's down then because i did the same exact thing a several years ago, When i picked it up and saw the yellow on its chest i felt terrible, That is one mistake that will not happen twice on my part.Don Strickland wrote:I once shot a Dickcissel because I thought it was a house sparrow, and last year I had a Lark Sparrow build two partial nests in one of my Martin Houses. Don't worry and just be sure of ID.. after a couple years of watching and learning you will be able to tell them apart real easy. Habits such as how they move and where they land is helpful too.

this is a real problem for me. Or.. well... it could have been, but I decided a few years back not to make war on the English (or common house) sparrow because my eye sight is simply not good enough at 30 yards to distinguish the many types of sparrows we have in the area.
I just lower my houses every day and clean out the nests not made of mud and sticks. The sparrows eventually give up and move on to other less harrassing areas.
