I know we have a weather man on here that always tells us when the winds start getting right for migration. If you read this please chime in. Got our T-14 ready on New Years Day, just waiting for that first song to start. :)

Martin Colony History: First pair in 2009 after 28 years of trying. 3 pairs 2010, 17 pairs 2011 and 35-45 pairs since. Many additional colonies are now springing up around mine in an area once completely void of Martins. I offer 50 compartments at my site consisting of primarily Excluder II gourds on Gemini racks. Also a wooden T-14. I utilize electric fence type predator guards on the base of the poles. Supplemental feeding is crucial in maintaining my colony. I platform feed throughout the season as needed. My site tends to be a stop over point for additional birds as they migrate further north.

I suspect it is me that you are referring to....

I used to be able to do a pretty good job with the arrival forecasts. Unfortunately it took quite a bit of time and they took away some of my upper wind forecast maps that were available from the gulf and south america region. This happened when they redid some of the weather sites online. I also took a lot of abuse from a few folks that did not seem to think it had any validity.

I was actually going to post a few days ago as i noticed the winds had come around down there. Probably should have as the next day was the first arrival.

Sorry I can't be more active as the "weather man" I do know there were many that really enjoyed it. The tools just aren't there anymore to make it happen. I put a lot of work into it. The one year I actually predicted Texas before Florida for the first arrival..... It happened too.

If you check some of my old posts they don't lack entertainment.

Doug
Supplemental feeding plays a major role in Western Pennsylvania. Finally got my 1st pair in 2009 after 28 years of effort. The colony has grown quickly to 45 pairs that I care for. Many new colonies have now sprung up around me in the past few years as well. Where there was none.... there is many.

You always do a great job. We always start looking for your forecast. I can't imagine people getting mad about it, that is just crazy. Goes to show the world is not like it used to be.
Thank you for the time you give to the hobby, and keep the reports coming!

Doug,
I agree with rrmartins. Have watched for your predictions and really enjoyed them over the past two years. What we are in our regular lives adds more zing and refinement and perhaps other perspectives that others miss to our passionate martin hobby. Your talents are very much appreciated. Please feel free to make additional predictions if you feel the urge. Many of us are just waiting to see what you think!
Best of luck for the 2014 martin season,
Debbie

Coldest place in US expected on Monday night is International Falls Minnesota at - 35. If there are any bird mites left over in gourds up north, I'm sure they would find it hard to survive - 35
ImageMite control, heat venting, predator protection and additional feeding during bad weather add up to success.
