Hello All!

I'm new to the forum and wanted to introduce myself to the group.

I'm a 33 year old father of two young girls who are 3 and 5 years old.

I've always had a pasdion for the outdoors, natute, and conservation. Being a father I try my best to instill these traits in my daughters while involving the family in activities of the sort.

I don't have any experience with purple martins but love to learn.

I'm in the process of planning out a T 14 for our yard, which I will be asking seasonded landlords advice and tips on to try to improve out chances for success.

I live in Whitehall WV on about 3 acres of cleared subdivision property.

Im really looking fwd to learning about this creatures and hope this year will start an anualfamily activity that brews wonderful memories that we will share for a lilifetime.

Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.

Welcome, Andy! Good luck next year!

Martin Colony History: Had a colony many years ago which dwindled over a couple of years and then did not return. Kept trying each year for almost 20 years and finally had a small success in 2011 with two pairs nesting. Colony has grown slowly each year with 22 pairs in 2015. In 2016 my gourd rack of 18 gourds filled up so I added 4 more gourds and then put up a small rack of 6 gourds. All of those were claimed within a few days so I believe I have at least 25 pairs this year.

Welcome to the forum Andy. I know you will enjoy it here and thanks for joining in with us.

Andy,
Welcome to the purple martin forum. There is a lot experience out here waiting for your questions. You will find the advice and critque you need while not promising to be all positive it will be informative and thought provoking. It's very stressful trying to start your own colony so any advice with regards to housing, location, placement of housing are all strategic to attracting that first elusive pair. Best of luck in 2014!

Martin Colony History: 22 year landlord, 14 at current residence..offering 9 racks and a homemade T-8 for 166 total cavities. 160 Pair in 2018 Racks consist of a Deluxe 12, AAA 16, Starburst 16, 2 K-18 Series, Super 24, 2 Gemini, Multi-purpose/two trio’s/4gourds and a T-8..Great hobby to be involved in..

Welcome Andy..my first question would be, do you have any existing colonies around your area? That would be a great help to establishing a colony. It sounds like you have an opened enough area to try to start a site. Good luck and don't hesitate to ask any questions. A wealth of knowledge and opinions here..

I couldn't agree more! Welcome to the forum. The folks here are so helpful, and really made a difference for me as a new landlord this year, guiding me through my trials and tribulations... You will make new friends!

Now is the time to learn all you can about Purple Martins; the PMCA website is full of info, as is the youtube videos from PMCA. If you haven't already, become a member of PMCA. You will be helping the martins by funding research, etc, and you will also receive PMCA "Update" magazine, packed with pictures and valuable advice and information.

Cheers to you! You are making a wonderful heritage for yourself and your girls! As a child in the 1960's, I was also infused with a love of Purple Martins and all of nature, thanks to my loving family...

Thank you everyone... this site is so full of great information.

What would one do without modern technology to help like minded people share their experiences with non experienced people like myself?

A lot can to shared in a short amount of reading and learning in comparison to how things would otherwise have to be learned the hard way though putting the years of time in and working through each short coming and failure on your own... I think alot of people would give up on interests if it wasn't for youtube and forums...

Hi Andy,

So nice to welcome another West Virginian to the forum and to the wonderful hobby of accommodating purple martins. It took me 15 years to attract the wonderful birds, but I have had them now since 2007. Last year 82 babies were fledged from my colony. I live in Morgantown, WV so am not very far from you in White Hall.

I just want to wish you the best of luck. If you are looking for help or answers to your questions, the forum is the place to be. There is so much help here among the very experienced purple martin landlords.

I'll be very interested in how your hobby comes along. Please keep us posted.
