Thanks Art. I taped the doorways because the sparrows kept going in. I only had one nesting pair in the house. I have not modified the house yet except for enlarging the doorways slightly. I noticed that the Martins seemed to be having trouble getting in so I shaved some of the plastic away. Seemed to work much better for them.

Both my martins have fledged and left the nest. I believe I continue to see them though because I see a couple flying around the house and landing next to the old nest. This has been going on for a about a week. Is it possible that the family would hang around for awhile?

Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.

Dave,
Yes they can hang around for a bit. Some of my families have and some seem to leave within a few days. It's variable and I wonder why. Maybe the parents know if their young are ready or not.

It makes me so HAPPY that so many don't "GIVE UP" after a couple years. I was very lucky to get a pair my first year, but, to those of YOU that keep trying and finally succeed, JUST MAKES ME SO HAPPY!!!!The PURPLE MARTIN LANDLORD FAMILY is great and I hope to be part of it for years to come. CONGRATS

Thanks Deb. I am still seeing them and at times we have 6 or so around the house. I guess these are different birds just visiting. It is nice to still have them around.
