I admit I'm a sci-fi fanatic (but not to the degrees that I'm a Purple Martin fanatic), so with martins always in the back of my mind was watching "under the dome" based on Steven King novel about a town trapped inside a mysterious dome. In the latest episode a huge flock of monarch butterflies is on the dome and you can see what looks like a Martin house ( a Lonestar?) in the background on a pole.
Anyone else find themselves looking for martins and Martin houses darn near everywhere they go and what they do?
I want a Martin tattoo too. Don't even have a colony YET but am a self-labeled martinatic.
Blurb over and sorry.

I heard about the martin house on the dome show....glad they are outside it.
Our society has gone nuts with tattoos..used to be for sailors and now all these women got them. Saw an attractive woman a few days ago with no tattoos but an ankle bracelet and thought of saying, that's sure prettier than a tattoo...then I thought I best sit quietly. ahem...if I got a tattoo, think a martin image would be cool.

- Martin Colony History: I have been exposed to purple martin sounds in utero when my mother went out to get my father away from his martin colony.
I played around the martin colony every summer and watched as my father maintained his colony. In the late 50's until the 70's he did not notice European Starlings in south Texas.
When old enough, I helped maintain his colony. My primary task was eliminating English House Sparrows with a 1956 Benjamin 317 .177 air rifle.
When I settled into my own home, I started my first colony with an original Trio Castle and Trio Grandpa. When I moved again, I did not put up any martin houses. Frustration with European Starlings in the Southeast US was overwhelming.
Found PMCA Forum and learned about modern enlarged compartments and SREHs.
Inherited my father's last martin house, a Trio Grandma, modified it to modern specifications and have had good results since then.
Sailors, even into antiquity, have taken the swallow as a good omen. Since swallows are land based birds, their presence informed a sailor that land was close by.
Many mariners would get a tattoo of a swallow for good luck at sea. They hoped that the swallow would guide them to land.
My paternal grandfather first told me this tale when I was a child. He served in the US Navy as an Aviation Machinist Mate, Second Class after WWI. (World War One)
His words have been confirmed by many sources.
His only tattoo was a heart on his right forearm. It was ugly, faded, and smeared almost beyond recognition by the time he was in his 70's.
When I asked him about it, his words still resonate in my head. "Boy, don't ever do anything so stupid!"
I learned many things from him and will never get one myself.

I think a gourd rack with adults circling and young'uns in the gourds would make a nice back piece but I'm inked from shoulder to elbow on both arms.avesrun wrote: I want a Martin tattoo too.

I have never been slightly interested in getting a tattoo although I think some of them look pretty cool. Funny thing is just the other day a thought flashed through my mind that if I ever got a tattoo it would be a martin. I have not watched the last Under The Dome episode yet and will look out for the martin house when I do.

I had no idea of the depth of meaning to the swallow tattoo until I read this article on Wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swallow_tattoo
I guess every tradition has many layers of meaning.
The Barn Swallow is the classic image used.

I have also spotted martin houses on TV shows and even sporting events on ESPN. Always say something and have to rewind because no one else saw it. Then they ask if I am even watching the show. Few years back on the news there was a story about Martins spooking horses in a parade here in Iowa, and a lady actually died. Should follow-up on that and see if the Martin houses were moved off Main St or if they left them

- Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.
Wow. Fun subjects. Martins, tattoos and TV.
The other day the 700 club came on. I wasn't watching it. But I heard martins. I went to the TV and backed it up. Sure enough some story about somewhere coastal with a reporter on a beach and I could hear purple martins sounding the alarm call. Cool.
I do not have a tattoo and tried to impress upon my daughters to not get one. My oldest did not. But only because she literally passes out at any needle and my youngest, now 23, has two. I have admired a few tats out there but usually just not my thing. Multiple piercings absolutely no way. The tongue ones I don't care for at all. Plus years ago I receptioned at a dentist office and they fracture people's teeth.
But if I were to get one a discreet purple martin tattoo tucked away would be my thing.

My only tattoo at present is a tucked away small American Goldfinch; the state bird of Iowa. No piercings for me. I do also want a small Martin on my shoulder with "Psalm 84:3-4" underneath.
All martin enthusiasts should know that Bible verse. Ironically, it includes both the love and "dislike" of our hobby!

Not Passer domesticus biblicus!
You mean that they had to listen to that annoying "Cheep, Cheep!" in and around the temple during King David's lifetime?
I am not a biblical scholar or an ornithologist/avian palaeontologist, but most sources indicate that Passer domesticus originated in the Mediterranean region and spread with agricultural development across the world.

If a swallow builds a nest in the eaves of your home, then legend holds that you have a blessed home.
A colleague of mine has had a pair of barn swallows build a nest under the eaves of their front porch. Her husband has been extremely annoyed that the barn swallows return to nest at their house each year. When I informed her of the legend, her husband decided that it is okay for the swallows to nest at their home.
Earlier this spring after that event, I became interested in the legend and its origins.
I was informed that some people believe that the legend began with the Psalms 84:3-4 passage.
Some scholars believe the passage was referring to barn swallows.
Is there any harm in believing in the legend?
Is there any harm in extending the legend to include purple martins?

Since the legend and psalm apparently address the"swallow" we must in my opinion include all members of the swallow family including purple martins.

Let us all keep in mind when reading psalm 84 vs. 3-4 that the H O S P is technically not a sparrow but rather in the weaver finch group. Therefore, when i read the psalm i have images of any other REAL sparrow (my favorite is Lark Sparrow).

avesrun,
Thank you for saving me from the terrible image of a HOSP in the temple of David's time.
I like the idea that the passage is referring to a true sparrow rather than a HOSP (weaver finch.) Yea!
I wish I knew a Hebrew scholar who could give a direct translation of the passage in the Torah.
Did the original text say sparrow or bird?
