Louise: Thanks for posting. I could not help but notice on the same web page there was the pic for the "Austin, Texas Purple Martins' Pre Migratory Roost June 22, 2012," but it sounds and looks like Grackles to me. Do they sometimes share roosts?
Interesting....
I had to deliver some tanks to a business a few blocks from there yesterday.
On a whim, I drove by the roost location and while there were no Martins in sight, the City of Austin had a large street cleaner/sweeper out there going in circles!

Bill,
Roosts can contain a mix of birds - at the PMCA/Erie PA roost, we see bank swallows, barn swallows, martins, and starlings - but each goes to a separate part of the roost. I sure heard the grackles you mentioned, they may have an oak tree of their own.

When I had a chance to visit and video this roost a few years ago, there were three distinctive groups of birds.
The Martins owned the block around the bank due to shear numbers.
The grackels were on a long strip of trees across the street on the mall side.
There was a group of starlings down the street to the West.
Most of the time, I parked and shot video from the parking lot across the street from the bank.
The grackels are just to the west of where most folks watch and video from as it is one of the "less bombarded" areas and those suckers are naturally loud anyway.....LOL!
