Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.

My daughter has moved to a new rental house in the country and found this poor bird dead on her deck. I cannot identify. ??

Oh and incidentally here is my daughter, Abby, and my newest grandson Karson! Showing off their deck and country view. Suh-weet!! Love them.

COOL! I have heard this bird in the trees all my life but have never seen one to know what it was! Thanks Matt, Thanks DebA! Wiki says it is also called a "rain crow" as a nickname. Crap! I didn't say anything about the daughter and baby pic! :oops:

Now THAT is a really precious pic of a mama and baby loving each other and bonding! Love the looks on both of their dear little faces! Su-Weet for sure! Hope she enjoys this little nestling for all the time it takes for him to "fledge".... Those really are the golden years, the stuff of life! Enjoy!

This is a great bird to have around if you are plagued with bag worms, especially up high in large trees. They will feast on a nest. They're the only bird that I'm aware of that eats these pests.

OK Matt, you are legit. I did some Wikipedia reading and looked it up in my KS birding book. I guess they are somewhat elusive. Beautiful bird. I read that they fly low so hit by cars and fly into windows frequently. Also will lay in other birds' nests. The bagworm devouring is interesting. My parents live fifteen miles from her and have a black walnut tree that they have to spray due to worms. Too bad they don't have these guys around.
