are somewhat close? Austin Wildlife Refuge has 3 Martins ready to go and the sooner, the better. They are presently looking for an active Martin Colony to release these 3 PM's to.
Any nearby area including SA would be helpful. If I can get some destinations here, I will call them and give those locations to them.
Thanks in advance for any information.
Does anyone know of active PM colony in Central Texas area

Matt,
Have you thought about releasing them at the Highland Mall roost. All my birds have fledged and are not returning anymore.

Matt my last group won't be near fledging until last week of July. Keep me in mind for later. All other nests have fledged.

Thats good question and I guess one I would throw to Louise or Penny. I do not know if adult parents will pick them up. There are thousands and thousands there swirling in hordes. These guys need parents to teach them how to be martins and catch food. I would be afraid it would be like being thrown in a stampede without warning without a clue of what to do.apundt-TX wrote:Matt,

Thank you for offering that resource. That is very nice of you. I will call them to see if anyone has contacted them directly about release locations and/or if they are able to hold the babies that long. They may not have a choice. These 2 late clutches you have is not common in our region and may be their closest and ONLY shot.Peggy Riley wrote:SW of Ft Worth near Glen Rose.
If a long trip is required, I may need to assist them. Let me contact them this week and maybe I can PM you here if thats ok with you. thanks alot.

Matt,
Another place to check out here in Austin is off of Barton Springs Road. At the corner of Virginia Ave and Meghan lane.
Also Hornsby Bend Bird Observatory just southeast of Austin

Truly thanks for all your recommendations in the Austin area Apundt. I called Hub Cap Annies and she has a colony which she said still has some PMs coming and going though she does not know the baby status at her site right now. She stated they will not be there for much longer which tells me she has some good PM knowledge .apundt-TX wrote:Also hubcap Annie on north Lamar had about a dozen martins out this morning
She was goiing to watch them today to see what they are doing now and then I was going to call her back. Very nice lady and a viable place of possible release for the future which Im glad I know about now.
The Wildlife Refuge Center released the PMs to the Highland Mall roost a day ago which was another of your recommendations . Im still trying to determine if this was the right thing for them to do for future decisions to local rehabbers.
Knowing effective local PM resources for our birds left behind will play a big role in properly closing out our colonies and meeting the needs of our birds that may need our help in the future .
Big Thank you for your help in trying to do this.

If you are still looking, the Hornsby Bend colony is still active with around 250 birds present as of 7/20/13.
