When I got home from work today, did my glance out at the martin houses and saw something odd. Went out for a closer look and one of the young had its nail caught and couldn't get loose. Poor thing was hanging upside down. It was one of the excluder gourds with porches and owl guards. The nail was wedged in the hole where the guard is screwed into the porch. When I freed the nail, I tried to place it back onto the porch, but as soon as I let go, it took flight. Sure hope it's ok. I know it was not there this am when I left for work. Poor baby.

- Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.
Poor baby...cept you saved him/her! But it was glad to see you! Nice work.
