It wasn't that hot today - a high of 97 degres in Dallas. To my surprise, while I was watching my most mature cavity (a baby was out on the porch), I noticed a baby on the ground. I couldn't believe it! I slowly approached it and it held perfectly still - untill I grabbed it - then did it squak and fight and got the entire colony flying around and nervous.

I got out my ladder, plugged the mature holes, and placed him back in the proper home.

I then hooked up my mister system and turned it on. I really didn't think this would be an issue until we got above 100. I was wrong.

Keep your eyes out for jumpers!

I imagine it will get worse too. This is when it pays off to live further north in the US. least they got some rain(minus twisters and wind)

John,
Just wondering what kind of housing you have? I have entirely wood housing here in SW Kansas and we expect 100's through the weekend. Not sure if any kind of material makes a difference in this heat but metal does heat up more that natural material. What misting apparatus do you have and how do you set it up? I am yet to set up a misting system.

John just a reminder to check for mites, it's time for them to appear if you haven't treated your house. They are a primary cause for young jumpers.

Hi Peggy,

Thanks for the reminder. I put Sevin powder in the sides of the nest trays about 3 weeks ago. The babies are too old to pull the nest trays out to check - how could I tell if there are mites? Would I see them on a bird if I picked it up? (the jumper did not have any mites that I could see)

Thanks,

John

That great John! You shouldn't have to treat again.

If it is mites you will see them all over the house inside and out. You'd have seen them on your hands when you held the baby. It's possible he got pushed off by another!
