Have had more SY's in the last 5-7 days that are causing quite a commotion around here. There has been one nest that has fledged and are gone most of the day but then they come back in the eve and want to go in their gourd but in the mean time some of the SY has laid claim to their gourd and it can be quite confusing before they all get into a gourd. But what I was wondering is are they looking to nest yet this year or just checking out for next year? I have nests in various stages, not sure about egg stage because I haven't been able to do a nest check because some so near fledging, but I know I have nestlings and also some that have fledged or are fledging. Does anybody have an idea? My thinking is it's getting too late to start nesting now.

We have a couple of SY pairs moving into gourds just vacated by ASY pairs, odd for this time of year in south TX, but not too late yet.

Martin Colony History: I started trying to attract Purple Martins in 2011. I got my first breeding pair in 2013.

2013-1 pair, 2014-4 pair, 2015-8 pair, 2016-12 pair 60 babies :-).

Been seeing more and more of them around here as well. My ASY male has another lady that's been following him around while mama tends to the kids... :)

Davlyn:

We are in Northeast Ga, not far from Lake Hartwell, or about 2 hrs northeast of Atlanta.

Wow all these posts about late arrivals along the Gulf Coast and moving North! I think we have more SYs here in SW MO too. Must have rode in on the winds we had recently. Had 3 (1 SYF and 2 SYM) show up today and my single SYM took them on a tour of his "mansion". They raised quite a ruckus, and of course all the boys were showing off for the single lady... I watched them all morning until I got binocular rings around my eyes! LOL Now they are out feeding; maybe little Missy will come back with my boy, we'll see.

Yes I am a greedy new landlord; one nesting pair is not enough!

Good Luck to all, and may the SY's all find nice homes and mates very soon!

Hey Martha , my brother use to live in Snellville Ga not sure if that is close to you are not . I have had the same thing happen to a few of my gourds when the martins bring their young back at night to roost they find they have lost their gourds to a pair of SY !
