I did a nest check yesterday: out of 12 nests found 41 eggs and 22 nestlings. one nest last week had 7 eggs, this nest check it had 10 eggs! whats with that? I'm sure not all will hatch but it will be interesting to see how many do hatch.

MM,
Ten eggs under a hen is not good, the hen will move the eggs around every day; she cannot incubate that many eggs ! Everyday a different egg, or two will not get incubated, in the end most if not all the eggs will fail! There is something fishy about ten eggs in one martin's nest, it is unusual :?:

Most likely it's two clutches - first one is not going to hatch, so the female added a new clutch and left the old eggs in the nest too. She may push them out or discard them. Best thing to do is leave them alone and see what happens - the good ones will hatch.
