Question To The Senior Martin Land-Lords
I have a BO-11 Gourd with a Crescent or round entrance. I have it on the crescent entrance. My large ASY male has a hard time getting in. I have only seen him go in at night and it takes him forever to get in. I was wondering if I should open the round hole for feeding season because I don't know how he could help feed or wait till the birds are out and file a little on the hole. I only had 1 pair nest last year and now I have 13 pair nesting this year with 5 being ASY birds. I don't know where they came from but I love the beautiful Males. I couldn't be happier. Thanks for your help. Dave

I wouldn't change the opening especially if there are babies inside. If he gets in at all then he is fine. If he seems to be struggling, you could try to apply a "grip strip" by the entrance so he can get more traction. Sometime the plastic gourds are slippery. Even some stick down sand paper would work.
hi I am not a senior landlord. but I have had this happen. and I filed some of the entrance down. then I changed it to a entrance that is on a troyer not sure what it is called? I did that by switching the gourd. he had know problem after that. and I only switched it because after I shaved it I was told a starling could get in.
