Is it typical of a Robin to take on a Starling?

I was in town today (not my favorite place) and stopped at a light that had a grassy lot next to it. A starling was eating and out of no where a robin drops down 3" away and gets very aggressive toward the starling, beak open and hopping towards it. The starling hopped maybe a foot away but that wasn't enough for the robin, who followed and was definitely being aggressive. At that point the starling flew off, and the robin started eating. Never saw that but have only been paying attention a couple of years so...

Is this typical? If so, I must get some of those robins to come hang out here!

You bet! They are quite territorial. They chase off the Blue Jays Black Birds, Sparrows' other Robins and even me when I'm Mowing when we get to close to there nest. It's really funny because when it's not nesting Season they will flock with the Starlings in the yard.

Awesome! Just spotted a robin hanging out in a "wet spot" of the yard so maybe I have some help after all! Thanks for letting me know for sure.

Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.

Robin's rock! They have such a beautiful song. It warmed my heart when the martins were learning to feed off of flipped crickets a Robin hopped around after and seemed to find some crickets too.

Robin vs a Mockingbird might be interesting...
2010: two pair nested, 1 bird fledged.
2011: starlings/sparrows destroyed nests. I shut down the house early to save PM lives.
2012: new T-14 with SREH, & a Beeman R7. Four fledged this year.
2013: Destroyed many house sparrows, but fledged 21 PM's!
