My wife and I are pretty sure the two on ether end of the rods are barn swallows, but what are the little brown backed, with white breasts close in with the martin? This is the 1st time we have had these that we know of. It is 32 degrees... birds are cold, but will be in the 50's this afternoon in Indy. We have about 20 martins so far, but far less from this time last year... hoping for more to come.

They look like northern rough-winged swallows.

- Martin Colony History: six pair in 2014, have grown to 52 pairs in 2017.
An interesting mixture of swallows. Besides the martin you have two other swallows. The last picture is the cliff swallow, which has the rusty red patch under the chin. The remainder are either the Bank swallow or the Rough-winged swallow, I can't tell for sure. My guess is its the Bank swallow.

After looking again, I think Ed is right, the last one is the barn swallow, if you look carefully at the tail you can see the long skinny feather of the barn swallow tail.

A good picture of some North American Swallows. Ed Pace is right about the bird in the last picture, it is a female Barn Swallow (Cliff Swallows have bright white foreheads). Scottfriedof is right about the drab birds. In the group picture there are Northern Rough-winged Swallows (bank swallows have a complete breastband and the white on their throat extends back and wraps around their ear area) along with the Barn Swallows and Purple Martins.

Thank you all for the help to zero in on the company the martins had this morning. Today was a great day for seeing new species... had a Double-crested Cormorant land on the lake... rides really low in the water. What a beautiful sight!

Same here, saw a female hooded merganser today, first duck in the area. Beautiful bird!

The way that nice thick brush grows over the water from the banks on the opposite side makes one think some excellent fly fishing could be had.

Takes a fisherman to notice... we live on a 40 acre old quarry lake, and own the 19 acres around the west side so no looking at other houses... only 37 houses on our side... 15 minutes from downtown Indy... it's like every day we're on vacation. Fishing is excellent... we manage the lake well... blue gill, crappy, cat, small and large mouth... and yes fly fishing is practiced here!
