Rehabber Penny Halstead said beef heart is very good for rehabbing, all protein, and uses it with martins with great success - so flip away, Lynn. Thanks for working so hard to keep your martins fed.

I just told my daughter hey I have alternatives to crickets and eggs...I can go buy beef heart. She said...you have crickets in the sink right now. I do? Apparently I missed a couple into my cricket bowl when thawing. Yesterday she asked me to not leave my bowl sitting on the counter when I come back in. I guess it is grossing her out some.
She's just jealous that I don't cater to and feed her anymore.

- Martin Colony History: Had my site up to 22 gourds of which most (+/-3) stayed occupied.
Downsized to 17 gourds due to back surgeries. Had 14 families in 2017 but did not do nest checks due to health. Feeling better in 2018 and hoping for a good year.
lol, Deb, who has time to feed kids during martin season? I can't even make it to the grocery store......those crickets might start looking tasty after a while.....hahahaDebA wrote:

Thanks for the advice Louise.Deb I know what you mean my wife is like that but she enjoy the martins to so she puts up with it!I came home for lunch and found 2 dead martins on the ground such a bummer
So I started lowering my housing first 2 no dead birds 3rd pole a t-14 started lowering it martins started pouring out of the south and east box approx 60 birds i counted 21 birds coming out of 1 cavity! but no dead birds in the 14 i have 3 more poles to go i have flipped 2000 crickets half a beef heart at least 2 dozen eggs and they want more, i have at least 80 birds im feeding right now. I have a feeling my other t-14 is full of birds to i dont know how i will get them all fed but i am going to try,oh the boss gave me the rest of the day off so i can get this done, well gotta go feed hungry birds.

Grocery stores carry it here in Corpus Christi, along with other organ-y meats (is tripe an organ meat, hee?)

Lynn, what a great boss! I lost my job last year and now am blessed to work from home. I was thinking how I would have struggled to take care of my birds with a full time job. I am only feeding 11 or 12. I cannot imagine what you have going on!

Just a word of caution about the beef heart everyone,my martins are in high survival mode right now.Im just sayin if your birds arent real desperate they might not take to it.Right now mine prefer it over eggs but crickets are still the favorite.I get my beef heart from the inlaws cattle farmers so i have a few on hand i been saving for this occassion. As i stated earlier i found 2 dead birds well thats all i found.but with weather the way it is i am far from out of the woods.

Thanks Louise and JL. There is a place about 20 miles from here I can check. I am from a pretty small town. We have limited everything here.

Lynnh,
How do you prepare the beef heart? Cut it with a knife in small pieces,or do you grind it up? Jim
