I took some pictures to share what 12+ inches of snow looks like while its happening. I did learn you can not flip crickets and expect the martins to see it unless you place it with in 2 foot in front of her, usually I lead them 10 to 15 feet in front of their flight path on clear days. I have been taking care of 2 females since March 13, both doing fine.
Expect the snow to be gone by this week end but their talking rain now.

- Martin Colony History: Area is rural. Offer 28 compartments...metal housing (Lonestar Goliad) & Supergourds all w/crescent entrance holes. Purple martins are abundant here and eager for quality, well maintained, safe housing. Expect near 100% occupancy this season.
Leverett,
What a beautiful set-up you have! Gorgeous houses...I love the gourd rack. You have obviously invested a lot of time & money in your martins. Thanks for sharing the photos.

Love the pics, Lev. Your T-14 is beautiful - that's quite some extensive owl / hawk guards you have on there!

Thats really some super impressive work you have at your site. You must have some dedicated hours on such fine detail. really really nice and that snow is thick.
I hope that stuff goes away and it warms up in your region soon. That kind of cold is so tough on you and your colony Im sure

- Martin Colony History: Had my site up to 22 gourds of which most (+/-3) stayed occupied.
Downsized to 17 gourds due to back surgeries. Had 14 families in 2017 but did not do nest checks due to health. Feeling better in 2018 and hoping for a good year.
Wow, green with envy
....what a beautiful set up you have there. Love, love, love, your gourd rack!!!! I want mine to look just like that when it grows up!

I appreciate all the comments on the t14 and I enjoyed the time spent building it. (I assume you are talking about the one in the avatar) That one is also my favorite, I refer to it as my t30( 18 rooms and 12 horizontal gourds)
The addition of the fencing material became necessary because of the coopers hawk pressure here, I tried vertical rods, (worked for owls) but they were making their living here plus feeding their family.
As far as the gourd rack it really looks good and I like the way it turned out, but I can not recommend it, 36 gourds is to many on one pole, high maintenance, and time consuming to do nest checks, it requires a 10' step ladder. ( I can not take the credit for this design, I seen one at the
victor Stoll's farm, (( Martin fest)) I came home and sorta built one similar to theirs) Lev
