- Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.
Where Oh Where has my little martins gone? Where Oh Where can they be? I hope they haven't froze their tail feathers off...before they come back to me....

I must not be the only one...I look out with binocs to check Blaine trap that I just set out yesterday in horrid windy weather. I see a black bird dance around to the back side of the Trendsetter. I run out the door in my pajamas still. We are in the country but do get some traffic on the blacktop road. Oh and for the visual...my jammies are not sexy...we are talking flannel from Bass Pro with trees and polar bears on the pants. Bed head to the extreme. I don't care! Crap, it's a darn starling.
I knew at that glance it wasn't a sparrow...I was so hopeful. I have SREH. We had starlings here the previous years but I never saw one land on my old S&K housing. Always just had HOSP problems. Starlings like the upscale look of the Trendsetter I guess.

LOL, I did the same thing this morning! Was drinking coffee and folding laundry, looking out the window at my lonely martin house... and from out of nowhere, a beautiful ASY male martin landed on top of my house!! What a sight! Confirmed with the binocs, hubby looked too, and I ran outside in my robe and bedhead to say hello and do a happy dance! Of course he got one look at me and gracefully flew away! I know he is probably just visiting, so somebody north of here has one "on the way"!

I see on the scout report this morning that someone in Pratt reported that they had some back. So yours are probably very close! I'm still waiting here in Leavenworth County, and I'm not exactly sure when to expect them. In 2010, they came back April 15, in 2011 April 01, and in 2012 March 19. The weather looks good here for the next few days, but early next week we're back to highs in the upper 30s to mid 40s. So I'm fine with them taking their time to get back.

dont wish to hard lots of dead martins around because of lack of food and subfreezing temps,warm up this weekend then more snow in forcast here for later next week,i only have lost one that i know of. good luck,we still have lots of snow cover on ground here.
