My martins arrived early even though the weather has been bad. They have been coming and going, but I think I have 9 so far that are going to stay maybe.

Martins are coming back to southern Indiana, but I'm SO glad they're not yet here 30 miles north of Louisville, KY. This is the worst late March I've seen since beginning to host martins in 1996
.
.
Fledged over 3,000 martins in beautiful southern Indiana since 1996.
Started 2 colonies and mentored 3 colonies with total fledged >4,000 martins into the world.

not as bad as you guys, but still... Here in NE NC, rain all day today and tomorrow... high in 40s, lows in 30s for the next 3 days. Been really unusually cool.
Had one ASY male hang around for a couple of hours 3 or 4 days ago, but nothing since. I think the first week of April is going to be a bonanza.

I bet you're right Rick - the floodgates will likely open towards mid to end of week! Better luck to you growing your colony this year.

thanks Jeff, i am optimistic this year.....just about 3 weeks ago i hired a guy to remove ALL tall trees in a three mile radius of the martin house.....well, ok that's not exactly true, but i did have two larger trees removed from my backyard (the two closest to the houses) so maybe opening things up a bit more might make it more attractive! ps, plus i hired another guy to tape shut the beaks of ALL starlings, hawks and owls in a 5 mile radius! is this even legal??? LOL

- Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.
Legal schmegal. Sounds like a great idea to me! I wonder if mine will be back this coming week too. We only got 2 or so inches this round. Good luck to you.

pmcharter1,
I had those houses long before I ever heard about nest checks.
I built an elevated framework for my pickup, so that I can reach the housing. Since being educated here on the forum I now have a new T-14 with a winch. I'm learning...
