As of 2018 - 84 cavities offered, max # of pairs hosted - 82.

Hi Jeff - I had to fly to Philadelphia this past week for work (very stressful week), so I wasn't able to catch up here or on my own colony for that matter. So, I was thrilled when I got home Thurs. evening and took a walk outside to see 6 flying around - 3 males, 3 females! It was great weather for them on Friday - 73 deg. here and good for them today too. I'm around my normal #'s (last year I had 8 here on the same date).

Yes, I'm proud of the gurls. and I know EXACTLY what you're talking about with the feeding experience and the "click" when they catch one. I stood outside in the pouring rain & snow for 8 days 2 years ago and that's all I could hear from 25 martins as I flipped & fed them. AWESOME can't even begin to describe it, eh?

MamaBruff - welcome to the forum! Yay - more Missourians! You'll love that Trendsetter. I've added more gourd racks to my colony, but my Trendsetter-12 will always have a special place in my heart, because when I added that, it caused the biggest jump (900%) in my colony population. 8)

It sure is relaxing to sit outside with them and just listen!

Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.

JL!!! I am happy for you. Kathy, I have missed you on here!

Welcome back to your martins Kathy. They sure do make the morning coffee so much better, huh?!

I've had anywhere from 5 - 7 martins for days now. Three times I've had at least 6 - 7 overnight, so I'm obviously hosting some travelers. Last night I had 8 come in, so a few more mouths to feed. Ordering another 2,000 crickets from Fluker Farms today.

Wishing the best to those in areas north of us who'll clearly be much more stressed over the next week's weather impact on their martins.

Hello Jeff, I had a couple of Purples show up today just in time for some rough weather the next several days. Always excited to see them come but coming on some nice warm southerly winds would have been better. Of course I plan to supplement feed and certainly hope yours, Kathys, as well as others make it through this time. Good luck.

Congrats Keith! Yes, ironic how this thread started with them coming in on warm southerly winds. Unfortunate that the weather has completely reversed for a long stretch of cold in the Midwest, but we're certainly finding out how resilient the martins are at feeding with steady high temps in the low to mid 40s.

Nice JL - I wonder if we shouldn't plug the north and west facing holes to prevent them from getting snowed into their holes?! I just don't know how they'd react to that since mine have been here for 2 weeks and have fought hard to claim the north and west cavities.

I really hope we do not get THAT much snow!
