Looked out at the gourd racks this morning at 9:45. To my surprise a beautiful, but cold, male martin was sitting on a super gourd porch on one of the gourd racks. I immediately thawed a few crickets went out and flung 2. He did not go after either but after the second one flew up vocalized once and he was gone. Don't really think he is one of my last year martins coming home. I have been watching but haven't seen him. Wish he would have stayed and enjoyed a cricket breakfast but he didn't. Will continue to watch for him to return. It is cold, cloudy, and 45 degrees. Supposed to be 61 degrees tomorrow.

It is cold wet and windy here also. I have about 12 martins now they seem to be doing good so far.I offer them mealworms and eggshells but they are not taking them.I have Quad feeder that i feed them in that worked good last year.Hope everything goes well for you this year.

This am 2/14 an ASY male is here again. Still not sure if this is same martin from yesterday but this one is perching on another rack, preening feathers and sitting on power line, flying around and coming back. I do believe he is going to stay with us and one of ours from last year. Guess the enjoyment and worry has set in. Good luck to everyone this year with your martins. I am posting today as arrival of my first martin this year. Temp 32 degrees. Sure hope it warms up for all our feathered friends.

This means they're getting closer to me... Hope they don't come back while I'm away this weekend! It better warm up soon!

I'm also wondering... when do yours usually start to come back? For some reason this just feels early to me. Or maybe I'm just anxious because of the cold weather.

Congratulations Terri  I knew it couldn't long before you reported your
martins!!! Wishing you a wonderful year this year. I worry about martins
in our area with the severe cold front coming in tomorrow, weather man say
lows down in the 20,s ? Though I have frozen crickets in freezer most of my
neibors with martins aren't so careing and thoughtful in that
way about there martins. I'm sure hopeing to see a report by ( gobbler t )!!
this year on the map and that he has a great year this year also!!

Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.

Me too, Diane! Rooting for Gobbler T. He has his own pep club.

Terri, that is great. Thank you all you great south landlords that try to take care of our birds when they come through.

WhoooHooo Birdy girl! I've been waiting to see your report also.

DebA & Diane, You girls are so nice! Pep club! Thats funny. (seems to be true, but funny)

I actually thought I saw 4 on my gourd rack Sat morning, but by the time I could sit my sandwich down and go (run) outside to see, they were gone. Not real sure, but exciting all the same.
