- Martin Colony History: I moved to South Florida, from Delaware, in August of 2015.
I care for a 6 condo Sunset House as well as two Deluxe Gourd Racks, with 24 Chirpynest/Excluder gourds, along a canal in Pompano Beach, Florida.
At Quiet Waters Park, nearby in Deerfield Beach, I care for a Deluxe Gourd Rack with 12 TVG's. I also care for a Deluxe Gourd rack with 12 Excluder gourds with Modified Excluder entrances. I am substituting 6 Chirpynest boxes for 6 of the Conley II entranced gourds in 2026.
At another local park, Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek, I care for a Trendsetter 12, 5 gourds rack with 60 Excluder gourds with Modified Excluder Entrances and 1 Deluxe Gourd Rack with 12 Troyer Vertical Gourds with Starling Stoppers over the Conley II's to keep out smaller starlings.
During the brutal, killer heatwave last summer did anyone notice a difference in survival rates between the Troyer Vertical Gourd young with the vent holes in the very top of the gourd and the Troyer Horizontal Gourd young with the two large vent holes in the backside of the gourd? Since heat rises I was wondering if the holes in the very top helped. I know that when the air is humid, windless and 104 degrees not much is going to help.
I know that I lost birds in both of the Troyer gourds with the vent holes just drilled out. This is the first time that I have ever lost any to heat and was not expecting several days of temps around 105. I am in the process of venting all my gourds with 1/2 pvc threaded elbows. It was a sad sight to find jumpers that were dead and some that I was able to put back in their gourds die anyway. Until last summer I didn't think we needed extra venting here in Iowa, I know better now.
