Hi Friends!
I read an interesting article this morning regarding predator control. Its a solar operated module that mounts to your rack or pole thats suppose to repel all predator.Has anyone tried one of these units. They are called NiteGuard.

Barry I do use the lights but I can't tell you that they work for sure! My problem is daytime hawks. While we do have owls I've never had much trouble before or after the lights. I have them so I use them!!!!

Hi Barry--
I plan on purchasing one this year. I hope it works. I have a Great Horned Owl that will get any martins that stay on the proch or fledgings that refuse to return to the nest and roost overnight in the trees.

I cannot answer it now but by the end of this season I will know for sure.
Hopefully someone will answer you that has used it.

have a great season!

Barry,

In previous discussions, some landlords feel they work, others report seeing owls sitting on the lights!

Probably the best steps to take first are: use deeper compartments and larger gourds; install external owl guards and/or cages; use baffled nest trays in houses, so nest is not in line with the entrance.

I would suggest doing some or all of the above first - then add the lights if you want to.

It is my understanding that you need 4 of them, one facing in each direction approximately 8 feet away from the housing.

Wyatt you are correct.

The unit produces a red light that is supposed to mimic red eyes that the owls feel are some type of predator. If you don't have one facing each direction then it will only be affective for owls coming from one direction.

I had a spooky looking night guard looking over my housing in the back yard. This was set up in front of my barn loft door about level with my racks and facing the woods, just 2 lights a hoody coat and a pair of boots, he moved a little in the wind. With a radio set up inside a bucket behind him he could talk and sing all night

P.S. I didn't name this one :???:

I purchased four of these and mounted them on a pole the same height of my gourd racks with one pointed in each direction. They did NOT keep the owls away. I couldn't tell it made any difference at all.

These lights may work if you don't have a serious owl problem, but if owls are coming to your place when you install the lights, then they do not work. I tried 4 of them, mounted in 4 directions. I saw an owl sitting about 2 feet under the lights, so they did not work for me.

I would recommend something more positive, like wire cages, deep compartments, longer tunnels, or baffles so that the owls cannot see the martins.

Thanks so much for all the input.Theres so many scam products on the market today, that a person has to be so careful as to what you buy.
By what you all have told me,these things arent that hot an item.

I kinda thought this might be a hoax as everything iv read about owls and deer for that matter is that although they see very well, especially at night, but they only see in grey scales and the owl actually sees in kinda of a infared spectrum. This alone makes me suspicious of this unit.
