Hummingbird moths

I was watering a container plant this morning and it is covered with huge caterpillars, the hornworm type. It's not the tomato kind but those moths that look like hummingbirds.

I suppose I should just leave them alone, right?

Peggy, if I were you I would protect them, and do what I could to help them survive the process.

Hummingbird moths are fabulous for nighttime pollination tasks such is required by natural gourds, moon vine, and other night blooming plants and flowers.

I think that was a pretty lucky find, and a pretty lucky opportunity for those cats to have found YOU........

Thanks Linda! I'll check them out further and see what I need to do.

They look like the tomato worm but a little different. Our tomatos are long gone so I thought I'd better check them out. I've seen a few of the moths this summer.
