- Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.
Fledglings will stay in any cavity they are "allowed" to remain in. During my late season nest checks I will frequently find fledged young hanging out in empty nests. The one thing I can say for sure is they like to be together. I rarely find just one -- usually two or three together. They usually fly out of the cavity as I am lowering the rack. My records tell me the cavity should be empty and yet, here's these guys. Are they nest mates? I don't know... can't tell 'em apart...
Sincerely,
Laverne
