I'm not from Michigan, but I sure hope you have success in attracting martins to your housing. I would think you surely should get martins with a colony only a block away. Good luck.

If I were a purple martin, I would want to spend the summer eating mayflies along Lake Huron. Do you see a big mayfly hatch up there like the one that occurs on the shallow side of Lake Erie every June? I lived in Jackson Michigan for a few years. I put up an old wooden martin house in May 1993 that was collecting dust in the barn on that property. I still remember the date that three purple martins showed up to investigate the house. It was June 9, 1993.

Hey V & B!

Down here in SE Michigan things are hopping!

I expanded my colony this year from 12 BB gourds to 30 BB gourds all with tunnels and SRE's, and an old aluminum house converted to 6 condos with SRE's.

I did my first nest check of the year on Thursday to find 16 active nest 30+ eggs in 7 of the nest! It also looks like there are a couple of poorly built sy nest started. They seem to think pine straw is sufficient when there are more important things to do!

At my parents' colony, the PM's actually kicked out the ts's and took over two gourds on a shepards hook that we put up for the ts's. We also have more nest in the gourd rack than last year, but have not done a nest chek there yet.

It's looking to be a promising year!
