Diatomaceous earth vs nest replacement
Has anyone used Diatomaceous earth for parasite control instead of nest replacement? How effective is it vs nest replacement? There is a kind that is actually used for a supplement internally for animals and people

DE is not recommended because the dust might get inhaled by nestling birds, or could get into eyes and mucous membranes, and the dust could be an irritant. Martin nestlings do a lot of flapping to exercise their wings prior to fledging, and that stirs up a real dust cloud of nest debris and feather sheaths. Adding DE to the mix is not a good idea, even though it's approved as a food additive.
