Well, I had birds arrive in February; relentless attacks from hawks in March and early April. Apparently the season is all mixed up with some pairs losing mates, etc.
Anyway, yesterday as I was watching the first fledglings learn to fly and return to their gourd, a new nest was being built in the gourd right beside them. I looked around, and sure enough there were 8 or 10 martins under the pines picking out the most comfortable pine straw bedding. Have never seen nest building range from early March to this late in May in coastal SC.
But maybe after all the hawk pressure the year will be successful after all......
