- Martin Colony History: First pair in 2009 after 28 years of trying. 3 pairs 2010, 17 pairs 2011 and 35-45 pairs since. Many additional colonies are now springing up around mine in an area once completely void of Martins. I offer 50 compartments at my site consisting of primarily Excluder II gourds on Gemini racks. Also a wooden T-14. I utilize electric fence type predator guards on the base of the poles. Supplemental feeding is crucial in maintaining my colony. I platform feed throughout the season as needed. My site tends to be a stop over point for additional birds as they migrate further north.
Thanks for the heads up Tim.
I have already been breaking up multiple fights with my 2 yr old ASY gang. Not sure I am looking forward to more of that ruckus.
OH well.... bring them on. The weather will be good for them to move way north early next week.
I know there is a big crop of them heading for my area.

Supplemental feeding plays a major role in Western Pennsylvania. Finally got my 1st pair in 2009 after 28 years of effort. The colony has grown quickly to 45 pairs that I care for. Many new colonies have now sprung up around me in the past few years as well. Where there was none.... there is many.

My ASY male who's been here since Easter, working very hard to get us a colony going, has been bringing visitors by regularly. Especially for the past few days. This morning there was a female (subbie, I think, as her breast was very pale). They chatted and flew around and would leave for a while, then come back. She went to the entrance of "his" cavity several times, finally went in, and stayed for about 10 minutes. Then another ASY male came through singing, and she flew out and went with him!
My boy then flew after them. He's been back, she hasn't that I know of. He has been so diligent. I hope he doesn't give up! But, for what it may be worth to others, I believe I saw my first subbie of the year today (the little girl who seems to have jilted my boy). I was going to put this in the Scout Report, then noticed that we are to post SY-M only.

I wonder would they cross over the Great Smokey Mtns., and then come northward to central Virginia. I would like to think so. The easiest path for them would be to stay on the west side of the mtns., on their way north. Thank's for the report.

Hi Virginians,
Four SY males showed up at my colony site yesterday. Over the last few days seven SY female and four SY males arrived. I'm located in the Southwest section of VA.
Keep the faith. They are coming. I hope most of the sub adults pass my place and head toward those of you looking forward to their arrivals.
Enjoy the passion,
Bill

Thanks for the update Bill!
I had several hopeful moments yesterday. Barn swallows and tree swallows were circling my property all day! I kept thinking they were purple martins and grabbing the binoculars...nope
Soon, I can feel it!

Icline85,
Glad to be of help. I know waiting for your first arrivals is filled with anxiety and knowing when the SY birds are in the area hightens the expectations. Are you playing a Purple Martin CD? If you are interested in sharing some local information I sent you a private message.
Enjoy,
Bill Pec
