I had an older house that I put up at my Mothers place that has round holes last year and all I got was Starlings. I am making some entrance holes with the SREH. Is the 1 3/16 height from the very bottom of the porch up or does it matter if the SREH hole is up from the flush floor? What I am wondering is if the SREH was for example, 1/2" up from the porch floor, is the Martins body only will fit in or is it that when the Martin goes in that its legs go up tight to the body like if the entrance was flush with the porch floor and that a Starlings body with its legs tight up to its body cant fit in the hole? If this is making sense to me, a hole flush to the porch floor would only let in a Martin with its legs up tight to its body enter and a Starling with its legs up tight wouldnt fit and if the hole was for example up a 1/2" from the floor a Starlings body would fit in if the legs were outside of the hole? Thanks ahead for you answers! Jim

The 1-3/16 inch height is from the bottom (flat portion) of the entrance to the top. Nothing to do with the porch, can be porchless and martins can still use the SREH.
Height from porch to bottom (flat portion of crescent SREH) of the entrance should be 1/8 to 1/4 inch at most, or flush. Having more distance, say 1/2 inch, from porch to bottom of SREH is not advised, could allow starlings to enter. Many landlords use inside and outside porches.

jIM,, THE OPENING IN THE CENTER IS 1 3/16 FROM TOP TO BOTTOM, THE BOTTOM TO THE SURFACE OF THE PORCH SHOULD BE FLUSH TO 1/8 IN. DEPENDING WITCH ENTRANCE YOU USE. i WOULD MAKE THEN 1/8 " UP AND IF YOU WANT THEM LESS ,THEN ADD A 1/16" PEACE OF PVC OR WOOD, HOPE THAT HELPS, ORTHERS WILL CHIME IN TOO

be sure to use calipers to get the final reading.. otherwise it won't be precise.

If you don't have calipers, then its nearly impossible to get them the correct size. I tried making them, and its hard to get then exact. I finally quit trying to make them, and purchased them.
Another option is to make a go-no-go gage that is exactly 1-3/16inch, it is very handy for getting the entrances the correct size, but the gage needs to be calipered so that you have it done right.

With the cheap chinese digitial calipers from harbor freight I can duplicate about anything
. Just like the chinese do
. To duplicate you really need few tools to do it right. Rotor zip, with sanding attachments, method of cutting them out of PVC flat plastic, tool to get exact measurement (like something that measures in .001 thousands or MM's). Anything made out of metal course needs to be sanded removing the sharp edges. Even it I buy sreh or get them included with set-up I still measure them. 1/64th of inch can make different in some areas.
