- Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.
I've found zip ties, soda can tabs, glass, etc in nests.

- Martin Colony History: Area is rural. Offer 28 compartments...metal housing (Lonestar Goliad) & Supergourds all w/crescent entrance holes. Purple martins are abundant here and eager for quality, well maintained, safe housing. Expect near 100% occupancy this season.
Martins sometimes add the strangest things to their nests. A few years ago one of my martins had a thing for stones...all with rounded edges varying in size from about a pea to a marble. Most of the stones were on the porch, with a few in the nest. Very strange!

- Martin Colony History: 2010-2014 located in Slidell LA. Gourd rack with 16 gourds. Max of 2 pairs during this short period in Slidell. Plenty of fledglings.
2014-present.. moved to Broussard LA. Same Gourd Rack but added a 6 room house (modified from a 12 room)
2020: after a long drought of nothing, 4 pairs and 4 nests, 23 eggs total.
6 fledges.
2021: 9 pair, 47 eggs
36 hatchlings
30 fledged
2022: about 12 pairs.. many eggs, all fledged.. only had one hatchling die.. probably because of our schnauzer. :(
2023: 16 pairs. So far about 60 chicks with about a dozen eggs to go.
2024: 13 pair. About 60 eggs
2025: 14 pairs .. 69 eggs.
In my first nest of the year one of the martins brought in an old lizard carcass. Yuck.

A few years ago my friend called me over to help him clean out his PM houses. We found lots of the usual stuff. One nest was completely made out of gravel from his drive way.. Even had a mud dam in the front of the nest. Talk about odd. No stick or twigs on any kind.

Sounds like that martin was thinking industrial grade. I have two pairs and each made a different looking nest. Both similar of course- but it was interesting to see how each female added things to kind of personalize their nests. My newest nest is really. She added lots of additional pine straw. It goes up the sides and back really high. Almost like she was insulating the walls.
