I believe that Lowes will try to sweep it under the rug and keep it quiet. I also think that in addition to contacting Lowes, this situation needs to make the NEWS. Lowes will have no control over that.
Just my two cents.

Nice work.
As someone who considers myself to be an environmentalist, I find this comment offensive. I am sure I am not the only one. I thought this thread was about LOWES dismantling and giving away Steve and Bob's Martin colony.
No offense intended. And I was meaning the extreme type of environmentalist. Looking back that part was poorly worded, my appologies. If you want to accomplish anything with businesses taking an extreamist approach is the wrong approach. If that offends anyone here, then they need offended. You will do your cause more harm than good by acting that way.

Now there may be times were extreme action is warranted, but not typically and only after all other means have failed. Calls, letters, ect I do not consider extreme provided they are worded well. Some folks are acting as if Lowes has a corporate adgenda to wipe out all martin colonies. There is no proof of that. This was seemingly simply a poor choice by some person in managment and at least it seems there is desire to fix the mistake. Pragmatism is important here.

To Dorn County! I also am a Environmentalist this afends me also. We all need clean water and clean air to live. Sometimes you have to be a little forceful to get it wright. Such is this blunder by Lowes. Good luck Steve and Bob, If I can help in any way let me know

Dorn, In your opinion what makes an environmentalist "whacko"???
Chaining yourself to the last old growth tree? Protecting air & water? Protesting polluters? How about having a yard full of Purple Martin houses??? Your statement was really short-sighted and stupid.
This is a forum devoted to the love and protection of WILD songbirds, an integral part of a healthy ENVIRONMENT.
I would guess that much of the Purple Martins winter range would be gone forever if it weren't for the "environmental whackos" that fought so hard to reduce logging, and protect areas in the rainforests of Brazil.
Remember to open your mind before your mouth.

Thanks I will just leave at this.. as I don't want to drag this good story down. Didn't intend to start a fire storm more to thank PMCA for what I thought was a good approach.

Lowe's has always been a "last resort" for me. I only go there when I can't find what I want somewhere else. I've never liked shopping there and your story just reinforces that. Thanks for sharing.

Martin Colony History: Area is rural. Offer 28 compartments...metal housing (Lonestar Goliad) & Supergourds all w/crescent entrance holes. Purple martins are abundant here and eager for quality, well maintained, safe housing. Expect near 100% occupancy this season.

Unfortunately this whole fiasco was probably born of the ignorance or arrogance (or both) of one individual Lowes manager. Ignorance and arrogance is everywhere you look.

Hey Steve , just read your post been off the pc to long ! I am so sorry about the colony at lowes , I feel so bad for the martins who have call that home for all these years !!! I sure hope they find a new place thats half as good as their old home place . Do you know if they had already started egg laying ? That really does break my heart ! As my grandmother use to say ( lowes has just opened a can of worms ) !!!

Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.

Hi everybody,

I too just caught up and read this thread. I am so disappointed in Lowe's corporate. I'm hoping by now they have reached out in some way. But what most incenses me is not only the uncaring thoughts for the birds' homes but how some local store employees decided to treat Steve and Bob personally. Even if the manager was new surely they haven't had so much turnover that an employee didn't know some of the history of how long the housing had been there and that on occasion every year someone comes by to take care of them. That several months out of the year no birds are here and logically that would be the time to remove housing. Why not watch for Steve and Bob and approach when one was there if they couldn't find any records as to who's property the houses were? The callousness of how they have handled Bob's questions initially and then the phone calls later...speaks for itself.

We try to shop as local as we can but will travel an hour for Lowe's or Home Depot. We have always favored the Lowe's store and bought several items over the years. But I just cannot go in there until corporate somehow steps up. When I told my husband (who is not active on this forum) that we cannot go to Lowe's he of course asked why not. Well, because of Steve and Bob and how they treated them. You know Steve is the writer I've told you about that I've learned so much from and had tornado hits last year.... Ok, he's up to speed now and so am I. So sorry too.

Martin Colony History: 2010-2014 located in Slidell LA. Gourd rack with 16 gourds. Max of 2 pairs during this short period in Slidell. Plenty of fledglings.

2014-present.. moved to Broussard LA. Same Gourd Rack but added a 6 room house (modified from a 12 room)

2020: after a long drought of nothing, 4 pairs and 4 nests, 23 eggs total.
6 fledges.

2021: 9 pair, 47 eggs
36 hatchlings
30 fledged

2022: about 12 pairs.. many eggs, all fledged.. only had one hatchling die.. probably because of our schnauzer. :(

2023: 16 pairs. So far about 60 chicks with about a dozen eggs to go.

2024: 13 pair. About 60 eggs
2025: 14 pairs .. 69 eggs.

Is there any update on this story at all? I have seen nothing from Steve on here for several days. I also never got that promised "call in 24 hours" from Lowe's, something they told me they would do when I called corporate to voice my displeasure with the situation.

I would really like to know what action, if any, Lowe's has taken. Their handling of this incident is going to have implications on my future purchases there... period. I have my Lowe's credit card sitting in a cabinet at the moment, and am more than ready to call and cancel my account, then put the card through my shredder.

So if anyone has any information, please post it.

Nice work.
Dorn,
I saw nothing offensive with your reply the John. He took a good approach and you commended him for it. Maybe some thought you were being sarcastic? Don't know.

I too, am an environmentalist but I work with a few "whako" environmentalists, and know how loony they are. :) But they provide for good laughs and I suppose we all need some humor now and then.

What they did in the Shreveport location was likely done out of ignorance. They have a serious HS problem in their stores and likely, someone not knowing any better, saw those nearby houses on their property as a source of the HS problem and wanted them out of sight. Or maybe they thought all the puple birds were starlings or blackbirds (like one of my neighbors thinks I have).

It will take a lot more than a poorly handled situation in Shreveport for me to stop shopping at Lowe's in Slidell. Over here, they donate a lot of money to local charities, community outreach, etc.

Thanks! Have a great season.

Thanks!
