Martins pouring into Central Indiana

Yesterday ( 3-23 - 2012 ) I had only a few Purple Martins @ my Super Colony until the noise of singing Purple Martins got so loud you couldn't hear yourself think .Many Purple Martins were coming out of the sky and paying a visit to the colony site! Thought people would want to know as some had wondered where the Purple Martins are this year . They are in my backyard playground !

- Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.

Thanks for the report Dan. Actually, I had been wondering why they haven't arrived yet with all of the warm weather we have had. However, today around 5:20 p.m. I heard one passing by my colony. He flew just over my head to say hello and moved onward north. It was good to see one. Maybe in a few more days mine will start arriving. Last year I had 21 pairs here at the Shelbyville Colony. Wishing you the best in a purple season!
