First report from Henderson, KY

First martin report from Kentucky! Right on the Ohio River border with Indiana. VA also has a report - they are moving up, and we can count on the weather being unfriendly at times, so have crickets in the freezer, just in case.

Noticed this also set a new early record for Henderson by many days! We have warm weather in the forecast for next week which could also mean new records for other locations for Kentucky. Hope the warm weather continues if this is the case. I lost several birds last year during a very cold week in March even with feeding.

Louise -- Is this year about average or a little above average? 900 Scout Reports before the end of February seems to me a little high. Just a thought..

I am sure a lot of you are having warmer then normal temps. I hope this doesn't get the martins north too early, as we could still get some bad weather in March.

Dave, I can't say if 900 reports at this time is normal or higher - more folks reporting would give us more numbers same as more martins would, if that makes sense.

Dave: What Louise said about the amount of people posting arrivals makes sense. But if you want to know what last years numbers were I can give those to you. 2/25/11--a.m. arrival 772 and p.m. arrival 801. 2/26--a.m. 835 and p.m. 870 then 2/27 a.m. 901 and p.m. 942. I kept track until 6/16 of that year and the number was 4382.

Ed-- Thanks for the numbers.. I know that takes some time to do. I sure hope that we have more people making reports. That would mean that we have more landlords, which would mean more housing for the Martins. Which would means more places for the Martins to raise their young, helping out the Martin population.

Another very early Ky report setting another record with a first time ever February report for Campbellsville.

I usually see the Tree Swallows just before my first martins. I haven't seen them yet. I'm just south of Louisville. I do believe the reports, though. Scary. This warm winter... hardly any snow in KY. I better get my housing up in the air. Good Luck to all.
