- Martin Colony History: First pair in 2009 after 28 years of trying. 3 pairs 2010, 17 pairs 2011 and 35-45 pairs since. Many additional colonies are now springing up around mine in an area once completely void of Martins. I offer 50 compartments at my site consisting of primarily Excluder II gourds on Gemini racks. Also a wooden T-14. I utilize electric fence type predator guards on the base of the poles. Supplemental feeding is crucial in maintaining my colony. I platform feed throughout the season as needed. My site tends to be a stop over point for additional birds as they migrate further north.
Supplemental feeding plays a major role in Western Pennsylvania. Finally got my 1st pair in 2009 after 28 years of effort. The colony has grown quickly to 45 pairs that I care for. Many new colonies have now sprung up around me in the past few years as well. Where there was none.... there is many.
now I'm picking jaw up off the floor...what a terrific row of martin homes. VERY IMPRESSIVE!!!! I bet the number of martins is dually impressive. KEEP IT UP! Would love to see you on the PMCA numbers next year!

David, do you have much of a problem losing fledging babies in the water? When mine are attempting to fledge a lot of them end up on the ground the first few attempts. It seems you would be losing a lot of them to the water. Maybe its just my birds, but thought I would ask anyway. Thanks.

- Martin Colony History: 2010-2014 located in Slidell LA. Gourd rack with 16 gourds. Max of 2 pairs during this short period in Slidell. Plenty of fledglings.
2014-present.. moved to Broussard LA. Same Gourd Rack but added a 6 room house (modified from a 12 room)
2020: after a long drought of nothing, 4 pairs and 4 nests, 23 eggs total.
6 fledges.
2021: 9 pair, 47 eggs
36 hatchlings
30 fledged
2022: about 12 pairs.. many eggs, all fledged.. only had one hatchling die.. probably because of our schnauzer. :(
2023: 16 pairs. So far about 60 chicks with about a dozen eggs to go.
2024: 13 pair. About 60 eggs
2025: 14 pairs .. 69 eggs.
Someone pointed out to me that if you look at the google map I linked to at the top of the thread and zoom in to where you can see the jetties, you can actually see the top of the bird houses and the shadows of the poles and houses on the water. Looks pretty cool to see that. Must be a fairly recent photo, because I didn't notice it last year.

Very nice. My son just moved to work for Fox station in New Orleans. Have they ever done a story on the martins there?

- Martin Colony History: Taking care of 11 active public colonies and trying to start two more in northwestern PA. Also attempting to restart another one in southwestern PA, in Collier Township's Hilltop Park. In 2017, not sure what happened but the ASY male returned and then a couple of weeks later he was gone. It could have been weather related. No other birds showed up. I had a starling nesting at the Public site that I had trouble getting rid of.
In 2018, we fledged 629 martins at all of the sites.

You have many envious landlords looking at these pictures. Fledging time must be a site, as well as the roost.

So this is set up by a organization or just Mr.Kite? I remember a Roy Kite on PMCA, is this the same person or do I have it wrong? I have been to this area before fishing however, that must have been prior to these houses being put up. Maybe someday I can lend a hand with the project's. There is a lot of potential at this site for sure!

Same guy-- Bo is his nickname. He is doing this with the "Mandeville on the Lake Civic Association" from what I know and they've received some sponsorship to help with costs. It sure would be cool to have a live webcam (or cams) that this site could be viewed or monitored from computer.
I know I would like to watch it. Especially as matins begin to arrive, and also thoughout the season.
