Martin Colony History: 2010-2014 located in Slidell LA. Gourd rack with 16 gourds. Max of 2 pairs during this short period in Slidell. Plenty of fledglings.

2014-present.. moved to Broussard LA. Same Gourd Rack but added a 6 room house (modified from a 12 room)

2020: after a long drought of nothing, 4 pairs and 4 nests, 23 eggs total.
6 fledges.

2021: 9 pair, 47 eggs
36 hatchlings
30 fledged

2022: about 12 pairs.. many eggs, all fledged.. only had one hatchling die.. probably because of our schnauzer. :(

2023: 16 pairs. So far about 60 chicks with about a dozen eggs to go.

2024: 13 pair. About 60 eggs
2025: 14 pairs .. 69 eggs.

Here's a couple of photos from yesterday in Mandeville La. We're installing about 25 houses. We were able to get 6 up on Sunday.

Loading up the truck with two houses:
Image

This is me- installing a house at the end of the jetty- nearest to the Causeway Bridge on the "west" end. Water is about 1 foot deep at this point in case you're wondering.

Image

Here's the area:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=lakeshore ... CCAQ8gEwAA

If you zoom into the map, you'll see the jetties. Should be able to get the rest done next Saturday. All the prep work is done now and it's only a matter of slipping the poles in.

As I was putting in the first house, a martin flew around and chirped at me.

Yeah, they are spread out over a couple of miles. Near a known roost (causeway bridge) and are heavily occupied.

One of the nice things about this site is ZERO HS and Starling problems. We think it's because the houses are over 100 feet from the shoreline and possibly these birds don't like the idea of nesting over water. We've had some instances of Fisher Crows swooping in and getting a hatchlings, but since then we've installed a predator guard on the front.

All of the houses are the same (for uniformity purposes) and we have some sponsors that kicked in money to support the upkeep and initial purchase. We replace mostly metal pieces like poles and mounting brackets due to rust. Lot's of little things, but the houses do quite well.

If you want to see what sort of action we have been having-- look at these great photos from prior seasons:

Yeah- we try hard to keep everything looking good and uniform. Many homes that line the lakes are valued close to a million and they see the same thing from their porches that everyone else sees. So we try to keep everything looking as nice as possible. One pole out of kilter throws everything off. Actually they are all really straight this year except the very first pole. We may go back and re-level. But actually, the martins seem to care less. :)

It's a bit narrow, but nothing like a balance beam.. and knowing the water is very shallow, helps too. It gets deeper a bit farther off

WOW!!! That is incredibly cool, if I ever saw that many Martins swarming my house, I'm pretty sure I'd pass out.
Is that on Lake Pontchartrain??? My sister lived in Hammond, LA and I always loved driving that 22 mile causeway. The egrets, osprey, and waterfowl in that region is amazing. But now I want to come down to see these houses in action!!!
You should really be proud of what you are doing!

Yep-- it's on the northern side of Lake "P".
It is an incredible sight to see when all the martins are here.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm just a helper-- the guy who heads this project is Dr Bo Kite. He doesn't post here much.

This year some of the volunteers want to do nest checks and report them to PMCA. I hope they are able to do it.

If you look through the photos you can see how the houses have changed a bit from 2009 to present. Bo added better perches, porch dividers, predator guards, and a better vent cap/topper.

Bo's condo balcony overlooks houses 17 and 18. He's got a great view from his spot.

These houses attracted MANY martins the very first year. Last year (2011) was the first year I was involved in setting up the houses in Feb. I went out there a couple of times to check things out. Once- in May - the martins looked about as thick as lovebugs. I was stunned. I figure many of the extra martins are likely visitors from nearby sites.

I think this place would be a gold mine for an ornithologist looking to do research.

Here's a pic showing the hosues lined up .. if you look really close you can see many more in the background:
Image

I like this one-- I think it's Bo "walking the line." You need to use the house as a balance beam. :)

When we did this last year, the winds were out of the south and caused the waters to be choppy. I got pretty wet. Plus, the jetties get kind of slick, so we now try to do this with a light north wind or calm.

I wish I could spend more time out there. It's a fun project.

David:

That is a great set-up you have and it is nice you have an agency to help finance all the housing.

When I had my housing on Lake Hamilton here in Hot Springs, I had one of my poles going into the water off of my swim dock. I was initially concerned about the pole rusting. I found a product called POR 15. I ordered the small starter kit and followed the directions. Several years later, when we moved, I removed the pole that had been in the water. The POR 15 was still intact and no signs of rusting. It is specifically made for ships and oil rigs to fight rust in the salt water. Here is a picture of the starter kit I purchased. You might want to check into this product to protect your poles mounted out in the water.

Hey David,

I am really impressed with what you are doing! The martin houses look good out over the water and martins LOVE nesting near large bodies of water.

You mentioned fish crows. These crows are a little smaller than the American crow and have destroyed many martin colonies in parts of coastal Florida. When I lived in the Tallahassee, Florida area, I would sometimes visit the beaches around Apalachicola, Panacea, and Panama City. The fish crows would pull martin nestlings from the shallow compartments of unprotected houses. I am glad you have installed guards on fronts of the houses.

Thanks for helping out with this project and insuring the martins have good housing to nest in. It is a most impressive martin colony!

Thanks! I'll look into that. So far the rust is not bad.. mainly it's the "galvanized brackets" we are using.
