Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to pass along that Mike North, the Minnesota Purple Martin Working Group Banding Coordinator has recaptured a Black-Capped Chickadee which has set a new longevity record for the species! Follow this link to learn more and hear him on the radio: http://www.kfai.org/node/40594

Absolutely amazing that a chickadee can live to be 9 years. I really enjoy these little birds around St. Louis. they are so tiny, you have to work at it to really see them, but they buzz in and out at my feeders all winter -- taking one seed at the time.

Thanks for the story. It reminded me of one by Aldo Leopold. I dug out my copy of "A SAND COUNTY ALMANAC" and reread his account of banding chickadees. He had one that lived for 5 years. For those who have not read this book, I highly recommend it, especially to those getting along in years like myself, It brings back lot of memories of my youth in the woods and on the waters.

Aldo Leopold is considered by many as the father of wildlife conservation in this country.
