I think I can finally say that we are officially martin landlords. After several years of trying we had three pair come this year and they all have fledged their young.Between all three pair they had 12 eggs and ended up hatching and fledgeing 10 really healthy babys. I beleive they are still around because this morning i counted 20 martins on my gourd racks.I'm sure they will be leaving soon and i'm also certain it will be a long winter waiting for them to return next spring. All this said i can't seem to stop smilling, finally we made it!
Thanks Todd

Martin Colony History: Had a colony many years ago which dwindled over a couple of years and then did not return. Kept trying each year for almost 20 years and finally had a small success in 2011 with two pairs nesting. Colony has grown slowly each year with 22 pairs in 2015. In 2016 my gourd rack of 18 gourds filled up so I added 4 more gourds and then put up a small rack of 6 gourds. All of those were claimed within a few days so I believe I have at least 25 pairs this year.

Congratulations Todd! I too love to read successful reports like yours. Keep on smiling as you certainly deserve the joy. Best of Luck with your future colonies.

Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.

That is wonderful news, Todd! Congratulations on the successful nesting of your founding pairs. Best wishes to you on the beginning of a forever colony.

It is still unbelievably hot and "dry" here near Houston, TX. The birds of our colony have been gone since August 5th with final fledging on July 28th. This was the longest season in our history. Our first nest fledged on May 2 -- so, even though it was a difficult season with drought conditions and not enough food for the PMs; they still raised a bunch of babies that flew off into the sunset.

Good luck to you and high hopes for a better season next year.

Sincerely,
Laverne

Congrats Todd . Isn't it the greatest feeling when finally after a few years of trying you finally get martins. I hope your colony grows next year.

I share your excitement of becoming a new landlord. I became one myself this year with one pair of subbies raising and fledging three young. I put up my first housing in 1996, it has been a long wait but worth it.
I also have housing up at my neighbors colonies which have done very well this year.
PMCA member and Martin fanatic....
2011 A pair of subbies fledged three young but none returned in 2012 :-(
2015 One Pair of subbies came and stayed a few nits but got chased away by Bluebirds and Tree swallows. :-(
2017 0ne pair of subbies nested and fledged 4 young
2018 Tree Swallows AGAIN chased away any martins that wanted to nest
2019 Same old story................ :-(
