Got a call frantic call yesterday evening from a mentee - his neighbor's Heath aluminum house was falling apart and 5 nestlings had already died. They didn't have a ladder and wanted to know what they should do.

So, I grabbed my extension ladder and went out - (they said the house was only 15' - (it was more like 18-20' up!!

I found a Heath house that was 3 years old - the PLASTIC flanges (2 of them) had broken and the bottom 2 stories had separated from the top floor and slid about 6 ft. down the pole. A bottom of one of the nests fell out, dropping the 5 babies to the ground, killing them. Other babies were poking their heads out and some were standing on the top edges of their doors. Of course, the martins were very upset.

Picture this: Huge oak trees only 20' away on 3 sides, powerline 4 ft. from the house, rusty 12', 2" pole, with another 8-10ft. of a smaller diameter pole clamped on top to keep it from sliding in and the house at the top of that pole - seriously, our worst nightmare. But this house was full of martins -- and my mentee 1 mile away, who has a great site with TVG only had 1 pair this year. :???:

We managed to work the 2 floors back up the pole, secure with a U-bold and screw the bottom of the house back together so that it will hold until the end of the season. Of course, 3 kids fledged as we worked it back up, but they were flying, so I assume they'll be ok.

PUMA house manufacturers should be ashamed - this plastic crap can and will malfunction - the cost is lives. They asked me if they should weld the house together next year. I told them to throw the [insert colorful language here] away and I'd find them some plans for a good house and plans for a pole. Ugghhhh!!! It's always something!!

yah Kathy.....seems to me sometimes these birds are their own worst enemy......don't think I'd check in at the slum hotel. I, however, don't have site tenacity, either. You'd think the Martin landlords in this case would have better sense. It's good you could save a few birds anyway.....and give the homeowner the Martin Landlord responsibility list while you're at it. Thanks for all you do.

Trisha, no - not Superwoman - I'm actually a big ole fraidy cat when it comes to climbing up ladders - or to any heights!

So, opinions, please - when I get him to take this house down & put up a new one, should I also instigate a move of the housing location? If I have them move it 40' away, they may hate me if they lose their birds. Other than being slumlords, they really are nice people and I don't want to do that to them. :???:

Kathy,
That was really awesome for you to take "emergency action" like that, to save the rest of those nests/nestlings!
Great job!

Martin Colony History: Tried and tried and had some visitors but...not enough good insects around here to keep them interested.

There are only two kinds of plastic. The kind that's broken and the kind that's going to break.

Since the martins obviously liked the location, I would instruct the landlords to put up a wood house of the same design in the same spot.
