My Aunt called and said she had two birds in the repeating trap that I made. I went to check expecting house sparrows. They were not. I'm not sure what they are.

Theses birds appear to be sparrows, but have white stripes across the top of their heads.

Any ideas?

Hi Allen.
From what you're describing, may be a White-crowned sparrow.
Check out this page - very helpful in ID'ing sparrows......

If you have a bird book, look up white crowned and white throat sparrow.
Both have white stripes with black on their head.

If it looks like it's wearing a white striped bicycle helmet, it's a white crowned sparrow.

Yep we turned them loose. No worse for they wear and had plenty to eat!

I guess I never knew there were so many species of sparrows.

APB, the *sparrow* chapter in the field guide is quite full with all sorts of native (wonderful) sparrows. It is unfortunate that such a wonderful little bird has to suffer the wrath because of one species.........the English House Sparrow.

The English House Sparrow is actually part of the Finch or Old World Sparrow family and not a real sparrow.

The link to Sialis is a great one, and should be bookmarked or saved to favorites. That site contains lots and lots of good information pertinent to martin landlords.

If trapping, when in doubt, let them loose...........Keep on looking at photos of English House Sparrows, and it will help you to make a quick identification if sparrows are in your traps.
Ever-Grateful,
Linda
