No Martins yet But?????

There is definitely still hope. I don't live too far from you and I just started getting my ASY martins back this weekend. The subbies haven't started arriving quite yet and they will continue to show up until sometime in June. My first year with martins started the first week of May and it was an ASY male that got things go so it can happen at any time.

- Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.

I checked the Scout Report for Ohio for 2010 and found that 4 landlords reported their first bird back on 4-23 and 6 landlords continued to report after that day - all the way to May 7th.
This has been an odd year with all the bad weather streaming through the middle of the country for (what seems like) the last month or more. I believe this weather may have slowed down the northerly movement of some of the Purple Martins.
So, keep your eyes to the skies!!

I just got 3 of my asy birds back. Last 2 years they have not come untill around end of april. The sy birds have not got here yet. And my first year when I got my first pair it was not untill june a sy pair. So their is hope and plenty of time. Just be ready. And good luck.

- Martin Colony History: 2010-2014 located in Slidell LA. Gourd rack with 16 gourds. Max of 2 pairs during this short period in Slidell. Plenty of fledglings.
2014-present.. moved to Broussard LA. Same Gourd Rack but added a 6 room house (modified from a 12 room)
2020: after a long drought of nothing, 4 pairs and 4 nests, 23 eggs total.
6 fledges.
2021: 9 pair, 47 eggs
36 hatchlings
30 fledged
2022: about 12 pairs.. many eggs, all fledged.. only had one hatchling die.. probably because of our schnauzer. :(
2023: 16 pairs. So far about 60 chicks with about a dozen eggs to go.
2024: 13 pair. About 60 eggs
2025: 14 pairs .. 69 eggs.
I was thinking about this- If you had an SY male and/or female last year and either of them was sucessful with raising a family- this year they'd come back as ASYs of course- but do you think you'd really know for sure if it was the same one? They'll look a lot different especially the male- do you guys know them by some distinguishing behavior? Or something quirky they do? Sometimes I actually think I could pick out my ASY male, Orion, in a police lineup; I'm starting to feel I know him too- and it's only been about three weeks

I've had ASYs migrating thru here all this past week. They'd stay overnight, 3 to 5 at a time, then were on their way again the next day, so I'd say you have PLENTY of time, especially since we haven't even touched the beginning of SY migration in southern Missouri.
Once these storms break out of the Midwest, the floodgates should open again for further martin migration. Hopefully you'll hear that friendly churtle soon!
