Jeff, if you put wire around the pole, this wire cannot touch the pole. Take the hot wire out to the pole. You could put several pieces of pvc pipe around the pole, the pvc pipe is an insulator, and then wrap the electric wire around the pvc. Hook up the hot wire, and that should work if you have a metal pole.
If you have a wooden pole, you must first wrap the ground wire around the pole, and attach the ground wire to a ground stake. Next, you put several pieces of pvc pipe around the pold, and then attach the hot wire around the pvc.
Another way is to alternate the hot wire and the ground wire, and wrap both of them around the pvc pipe. It may take about 8 or 10 short pieces of pvc, just tape the pvc to the pole at the top and bottom, then alternate the hot and ground wire around the pvc pipe.
No matter how you do it, the snake or racoon must touch the ground and the hot wire at the same time. The ground can be the earth or dirt around the pole, or it can actually be another wire that is grounded.
If you have any questions, let me know.

thanks emil i have pvc around the pole and a peice of 2x2 foot of rabbitt wire around the pvc pipipe annd the hot wire hooked to the rabbitt wire and i am getting no juice.by the way rabbitt wire is like chicken wire only the openings r smaller .anyway any suggestions
thanks,
jeff
thanks,
jeff
The rabbit wire isn't touching the ground is it? If it is insulated from the pole, and not touching the ground, you almost certainly have a break in the wire coming from the charger, or a short somewhere. Provided that you have voltage output at the charger which I believe you said that you did. Does the wire running from the charger to the pole have voltage on it at the pole? If it does, and it "grounds out" when you hook up the rabbit wire, the short is in the rabbit wire. I deal with an electric fence all the time. Start at the charger and eliminate problems as you work towards the pole. You have to unhook the connections from one step to the other to find where the short is. Example, unhook the supply wire from the rabbit wire, check the supply wire for voltage....

I agree with Brad, you must have a short somewhere. Touch the hot wire at the pole, and if it doesn't shock you, then you have a short between the pole and the charger.

What are you using for your hot wire? Is it insulated up to spot you want to electrify? You should see a spark jump across when you hold the end hot wire near a grounded object. You also want good solid ground rods driven deep into the ground. I think aluminumn wire works best for the hot wire. Make sure your hot wire connection to the charger is good and tight so it won't spark, if it's loose and sparking you might not be getting a full charge into the wire.
