congrats tony :-)

Courtney,

I think we need to re-visit and update the scout report criteria at PMCA. I hear a lot of confusion about scout reports in comments and emails. People are not sure what a scout is, or when to report. Some say, we have martins here but not sure if they are scouts or not. Some think birds that stay are scouts, others think the birds have to NOT stay to be scouts! Some think a martin has to land to constitute a scout arrival. Some report birds they see elsewhere in the community, not at a colony site.

Generally if a martin is sighted at martin housing, that's good for a report with me.

Thanks guys,
Time will tell! I've been wondering if he was one of the elderly lady's birds. They have been here about 2 months without a female. I wondered if he came here to see if there were any females he could steal!

Even if, it's great to see one!
Tony

Boy I'm sure glad you said this, We've been in my yard with my dogs whistling their tune, talkin to them to where I think they know we're the good guys because they wont fly away when we're around, when I tell my co-workers they laugh at me, lol.

Start Whistling Tony, or read them a night time storie like my daughter does.

Martin Colony History: 2010-2014 located in Slidell LA. Gourd rack with 16 gourds. Max of 2 pairs during this short period in Slidell. Plenty of fledglings.

2014-present.. moved to Broussard LA. Same Gourd Rack but added a 6 room house (modified from a 12 room)

2020: after a long drought of nothing, 4 pairs and 4 nests, 23 eggs total.
6 fledges.

2021: 9 pair, 47 eggs
36 hatchlings
30 fledged

2022: about 12 pairs.. many eggs, all fledged.. only had one hatchling die.. probably because of our schnauzer. :(

2023: 16 pairs. So far about 60 chicks with about a dozen eggs to go.

2024: 13 pair. About 60 eggs
2025: 14 pairs .. 69 eggs.

David,
Yes I reported it. I was told when I first joined to post a scout report when a scout checks out "your" site. There are quite a few who do it that way from what I understand. I quess it could by technically incorrect. If they don't want it they can kick it off or not post it. What do I care, I HAVE A VISITOR!
A-Ok, I understand, and yes I guess I should technically report my first scouts from March. I just thought it was "first sighting overhead".

I'm happy you have some visitors. I'm hoping to get my first pair to spend the night any day now. I've been getting quite a few visits and landings.

good job!

How about stop calling it a scout report and just call it "report your first martin sighting" ?

Criteria would be any confirmed sighting-- whether it be martins spotted overhead or landing at your site. Just an idea.

HUH??????
Be careful "T". He's a fighter.....I had to evict him from our site or the others were threating to leave if he didn't.
Wanted to fight everything in site. I told him he was acting just like someone from Miss., so go live with Gobbler-T......

Actually, I have been checking the scout report almost daily because I was wanting to see that white corner spot disappear.

I think all of us on here was as excited for you as you were.

Geeezzzz....I guess now, you will get the big head and start telling the rest of us how to do this and how to do that....

Now go put a lease on him and tie him to the pole....I don't want him back down here my friend.

Thanks all for the congrats.

I understand that he's just a visitor at this point. But I gota start somewhere

James,
I appreciate it dude! You can send me any unruly martin you have. And anybody else for that matter! I don't discriminate here, I'll take them all. Blind, crippled, or crazy!
I think all of us on here was as excited for you as you were.
I think you might be right.

JamesinIA,
It was quick! There are a lot of good folks here and I appreciate each and every well wish and thought. I really do.

When I first joined this forum, I told my wife on a few occasions "I don't think those people like me too much" It's more than obvious to me that that is far from the truth!

Tony, this is my 5th year trying, too! Now it's my turn to have a visitor! Come on now, share... ;) When you fill up in a week or two  send one my way! Tell him or her that I have plenty of flying bugs around here to eat, no S&S, and some nice ventilated gourds with pine straw and mints on their pillows. 8)

Congrats. I hope he stays. Be sure to keep the sparrows and starlings away, and be with your martin alot. He will raise you sprits of attracting a colony, and he will get used to you which form a bond with you.

Landonn
2010 1 pair at each site. Plus some unmated subadults hanging around at both sites.
2009 Had a lone subadult spend the summer
2008 visitors.

Martin Colony History: Had a colony many years ago which dwindled over a couple of years and then did not return. Kept trying each year for almost 20 years and finally had a small success in 2011 with two pairs nesting. Colony has grown slowly each year with 22 pairs in 2015. In 2016 my gourd rack of 18 gourds filled up so I added 4 more gourds and then put up a small rack of 6 gourds. All of those were claimed within a few days so I believe I have at least 25 pairs this year.

Wonderful news Tony! You certainly deserve it. Hope he is out gathering the rest of his clan for your colony.

Gobbler T,

Congrats. At least you didn't have to wait 7 years like I did. I am sure he will be back.

I am still waiting for my PM's here in Illinois. They are in almost all towns around me. They even past me up and went to the Northern states. I didn't get my pair until the 2nd week in May last year. So maybe they won't show up for an other 2 weeks. I know I am getting anxious.

Hope you have a good season.

Steve
