I'm so done with the sparrows that won't stay out of my BB houses. I've been shopping for a good repeating trap, but I'd like to hear from you folks.

I want a repeating trap because I want to completely clear my area of HOSP.

I'm considering the Deluxe Repeating Sparrow Trap. Any advice about any others--especially cheap ones--would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Jerry,

I know lots of folks have those and like them. My favorite is the ST-1 wire sparrow trap, it's not a repeater but since I work from home I can reset the two trap chambers as needed, and have caught 6 in a day.

I also have the PMCA repeating trap, spare-O-door traps for Trio houses, and a nestbox trap that's best for starlings. For me, ST-1 is the most productive.

Here's a repeating trap you can build yourself:

I think I'm going to build the trap Louise suggested...Thanks Louise.

Once I trap them, I'm going to put them out with starting fluid inside a garbage bag.

Martin Colony History: 2014 1 pair 3 hatched 3 fledged
2015 1 pair 5 hatched 5 fledged
2016 1 pair 5 hatched 4 fledged
2017 2 pair 8 hatched 8 fledged
2018 4 pair 15 hatched

I also use starter fluid but put it in a zip lock bag, It works faster and you use less than having to fill a garbage bag. Mary

It sounds as if you have already decided the way to proceed to "take care of" the sparrows. Luckily they give me no problem but the starlings are a real threat here. If you think the nest box trap would work for you it is easily made and works like a charm. I can find and provide the plans if you decide to build one. I caught 4 starlings within a 10 minute period the other day.

I wish you well with your endeavors

I built a Brad Biddle Trap and it works !! At first I had the wires pointed down too far in front of the corral and they was not entering the trap. Once I made the adjustment, I caught many.
I manage 2 public sites, and one at home, for a total of 172 cavities. Board Member / Non Profit PMCA.

Matt,

Shopping info (where to buy, best price, etc) is not allowed in posts - so you'll have to do your own online searches for that info. I hope you don't mind me putting this reminder for everyone into this post. It's so easy to google for things these days.

Forum users are welcome to discuss all martin products, by name - if you've used a product and have comments, it's allowed. Or if someone is considering an item and wants some opinions, that's fine.

We don't allow shopping info, including links to sites selling martin products, for several reasons, chief among them being that this forum would quickly turn into an advertising & shopping site, instead of being focused on landlord education and support. Also, the PMCA supports itself (and this forum) through memberships and product sales. We hope people will consider buying from the PMCA when they can, to help us continue our many worthwhile research and education projects. No matter where you buy your martin products, we hope you'll support the PMCA with an annual membership - best value for the least cost.

You might want to consider using the spar-o-door, it's not a repeating trap but that thing works, I have 2 modified to fit a wooden box, I quit using the catch cup/bag and added an access port on the side.

If the sparrows are bothering your bluebird boxes get a Van Ert sparrow trap. You can premount two screws in each bluebird box. When sparrows show interest in a box and start nest building slip the trap on the screws and trap the sparrow.

Thanks for all the advice and help folks. I like the Van Ert trap's price, but I think I'd have a hard time catching the bird once the trap has tripped.

How do you get it out without setting it free?

Put a plastic bag over the box that is tranparent. Open the bluebird box and the captured bird will fly in toward the light. Once you identify it is a sparrow take care of it.
